Terrell Owens Sued by Nolan Wells’ Friends Over Social Media Posts About Student’s Death

NFL LEGEND TERRELL OWENS SUED AFTER DEMANDING ARRESTS IN MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF COLLEGE STUDENT

A lawsuit involving the mysterious death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells has taken a new turn, with three of his friends suing former NFL star Terrell Owens for alleged defamation.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Mississippi by the fathers of Warren Hudson, Jax Pitalo and Morgan Seymour, who are considered minors under state law because they are under 21.

The dispute centers on a social media post Owens shared on September 26. In the post, he demanded that the three friends be arrested and linked to a video suggesting they were involved in Wells’ death and had tampered with his phone.

The friends deny wrongdoing. Their lawsuit alleges that Owens’ post damaged their reputations and exposed them to serious threats and harassment from strangers online and in public.

A DEATH THAT SPARKED QUESTIONS

Nolan Wells disappeared after a Fourth of July boat outing with a group of friends to Horn Island, off the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

According to accounts provided by his friends, Wells did not return to the mainland with the group. They said he had chosen to remain on the island to speak with a girl, although his family has disputed aspects of that account.

His body was discovered near the island’s coast two days later.

The circumstances surrounding his death prompted widespread public attention and speculation, particularly after photographs of Wells with his friends circulated online.

However, both the state autopsy and an independent examination commissioned by his family failed to establish a definitive cause of death.

A Mississippi grand jury subsequently declined to recommend criminal charges. Its findings indicated that the death was consistent with drowning, although Wells’ family and their attorneys have questioned aspects of the investigation.

THE SOCIAL MEDIA CONTROVERSY

Owens, a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, had previously pledged $25,000 toward a reward fund for information leading to an arrest and conviction in Wells’ case.

But his September post became the focus of a separate legal dispute.

The lawsuit alleges that publicly demanding the friends’ arrests, while sharing a video implying they were responsible for Wells’ death, encouraged online hostility against them despite the lack of criminal charges.

The plaintiffs’ attorneys say the young men have faced threats, harassment and damage to their reputations. They are seeking legal accountability through the civil court system.

Owens had not publicly responded to the lawsuit at the time of the reports.

THE CASE IS NOW ABOUT MORE THAN ONE DEATH

The legal dispute highlights the consequences that can follow when unverified accusations spread rapidly across social media, particularly in cases involving a death that has attracted intense public attention.

For Nolan Wells’ family, questions about what happened to their son remain. For his three friends, the lawsuit seeks to address what they describe as harmful public accusations.

The defamation case does not determine how Wells died or establish responsibility for his death. Those questions remain separate from the allegations against Owens.

As the legal proceedings move forward, the central issues will include whether the statements at issue were defamatory under the law and whether the plaintiffs can establish their claims in court.
