I’D RATHER MARRY A STRANGER THAN SPEND MY LIFE WITH YOU, SHE SAID… THEN SHE CAME BACK BROKEN

Chapter 1 — The Woman Who Walked Away

In the quiet town of Blackwood, where wealthy families controlled the land and ordinary people struggled to survive, Daniel Carter had spent ten years loving a woman who never truly appreciated him.

Her name was Victoria Hayes.

Beautiful, ambitious, and raised in a family that valued money above everything, Victoria had once promised Daniel that they would build a life together. He believed her promises because, despite his humble background, he had given her everything he possessed—his time, his loyalty, and his heart.

But when Victoria’s father lost his fortune, she began to see Daniel differently.

He was a carpenter who worked from sunrise until sunset. He lived in a modest wooden house, drove an old truck, and had no wealthy relatives to rescue him from hardship.

Victoria wanted a life of luxury.

And when a rich businessman named Richard Montgomery proposed to her, she made her decision.

One rainy evening, she arrived at Daniel’s house wearing an elegant red coat. A diamond ring glittered on her finger.

Daniel stood beside the fireplace, holding two cups of coffee. He had spent the entire afternoon preparing her favorite dinner, hoping to surprise her.

Instead, she placed a small velvet box on the table.

“What is this?” he asked.

“My engagement ring.”

For a moment, Daniel thought he had misunderstood.

“Engagement?”

Victoria looked away before answering.

“I’m marrying Richard.”

Daniel slowly lowered the coffee cup in his hand.

“Why, Victoria? I thought we were going to get married.”

She sighed impatiently.

“We were young. We made promises. That doesn’t mean I have to ruin my future because of them.”

“Ruin your future?” Daniel repeated quietly. “Is loving me really that terrible?”

She looked at his worn clothes, the simple furniture, and the firewood stacked beside the door.

Then she delivered the words that would haunt him for years.

“I’d rather marry a stranger than spend my life with you.”

The room fell silent.

Daniel stared at her, searching for even a trace of the woman who had once cried in his arms and promised never to leave him.

“Do you really mean that?”

“Yes,” she replied. “Richard can give me the life I deserve. You can’t.”

Daniel nodded slowly, though something inside him had broken.

“Then go.”

Victoria seemed surprised by how calmly he spoke.

“You’re not going to fight for me?”

“No,” he answered. “Love shouldn’t require someone to beg to be chosen.”

For the first time, Victoria had nothing to say.

She picked up her handbag and walked toward the door.

Daniel followed her with his eyes but did not move.

Before stepping outside, she turned around.

“One day, you’ll understand that I made the right decision.”

He looked at her for a long moment.

“Perhaps. But I hope you never have to discover whether you were wrong.”

The door closed behind her.

That night, Daniel sat alone beside the fireplace until the flames died.

He did not chase her.

He did not call her.

And when morning came, he returned to work.

Over the next five years, Daniel rebuilt his life. He expanded his small carpentry business, purchased abandoned land outside town, and eventually established Carter Construction, a company that became one of the most successful building firms in the county.

He remained humble, never forgetting the nights when he could barely afford groceries.

But he stopped believing that love alone could make someone stay.

Meanwhile, Victoria married Richard Montgomery in a lavish ceremony attended by politicians, business owners, and society’s wealthiest families.

She believed she had secured the perfect future.

She had no idea that her greatest heartbreak was still waiting for her.

And five years later, on a freezing November night, someone knocked on Daniel’s door.

When he opened it, the woman standing on his porch looked nothing like the confident beauty who had once walked away.

Her coat was torn.

Her face was pale.

And tears streamed down her cheeks.

“Daniel,” she whispered.

He stared at her in disbelief.

Victoria lowered her eyes.

“Please… I have nowhere else to go.”
