Michael Bowen Sentenced to Life for Murder of Mother Janet Bowen, 65

Son Sentenced to Life in Prison for Murdering His 65-Year-Old Mother

A 35-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of murdering his own mother at their home in Hampshire, England.

Michael Bowen was sentenced at Winchester Crown Court on October 9, 2026, for the killing of his 65-year-old mother, Janet Bowen. He must serve a minimum of 16 years in prison before he can be considered for release.

A Tragedy Inside the Family Home

The incident took place in the early hours of New Year’s Eve 2025 at the family’s home in Maple Gardens, Yateley.

The court heard that Janet had recently suffered a stroke and was particularly vulnerable. Bowen, who had helped care for his mother, attacked her with a hammer, causing fatal injuries.

Police were called on December 31 after Janet was found dead at the property. Her son left the scene and was later arrested as the

investigation unfolded.

What the Court Heard

During proceedings, the court heard that an argument had taken place after Bowen smashed a window at the property. He later told police that he had heard voices telling him to harm his mother.

Medical evidence presented during the trial indicated that Bowen had suffered from a substance-induced psychotic disorder. However, the jury rejected the defence of diminished responsibility and found him guilty of murder.

The case also revealed the devastating impact of Janet’s death on the family.

Her daughter, Samantha Bowen, described her mother as a kind and loving person who had always put her family first. She said the loss had deeply fractured the family and left her struggling with grief.

A Family Left to Grieve

Following the sentencing, police acknowledged the courage of Janet’s relatives, who had endured both the loss of a loved one and the emotional strain of the court proceedings.

The case has highlighted the devastating consequences of violence within a family, leaving loved ones to deal with an irreversible loss.
