Aimee Mullins: The Double-Amputee Athlete Who Became a Model and Actress
Born Without Two Shinbones, Aimee Mullins Became a Record-Breaking Athlete, Fashion Model and Actress

Aimee Mullins was born with a rare condition that left her without the fibula bones in both legs. Doctors amputated both legs below the knee when she was just one year old. What followed was a life that would challenge expectations and take her from the track to international fashion runways and Hollywood television.
Born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, Mullins was once told that she might never walk independently. By the age of two, however, she had learned to walk using prosthetic legs. Instead of allowing her physical condition to keep her away from sports, she grew up swimming, biking, skiing and playing games with other children.
Her athletic journey eventually led her to Georgetown University, where she joined the university’s Division I track and field team. She became the first woman with a disability to compete in NCAA track and field, breaking new ground in collegiate sports.
In 1996, Mullins competed at the Paralympic Games in Atlanta, taking part in the 100-meter sprint and long jump. Using innovative carbon-fiber prosthetic legs inspired by the shape of a cheetah’s hind legs, she went on to set world records in the 100 meters, 200 meters and long jump in her competitive career.

But sports were only the beginning.
In 1999, fashion designer Alexander McQueen invited Mullins to walk in a London runway show. Wearing specially designed wooden prosthetic legs, she challenged traditional ideas of beauty and demonstrated how prosthetic technology could be viewed not simply as a medical necessity, but also as a form of design and personal expression.
Her work in fashion brought international attention, and she later built a career as a public speaker and actress. She appeared in film and television productions, including Netflix’s Stranger Things, introducing her to audiences far beyond the sporting world.
Mullins has also spoken at TED conferences about adversity, identity and the possibilities of prosthetic technology. In her talks, she encourages people to question the assumptions society makes about disability and human potential.
Her story is not simply about overcoming a physical challenge. It is also about challenging the limits other people may place on someone before that person has had the opportunity to show what they can do.
From learning to walk as a toddler to competing on the international stage, appearing on fashion runways and building an acting career, Aimee Mullins has helped reshape conversations about disability, sport and beauty.
Her journey continues to remind audiences that a person’s future cannot always be predicted by their medical diagnosis or the expectations of others.
