Valentina Vassilyev: The Russian Woman Reportedly Said to Have Given Birth to 69 Children
The Woman Who Reportedly Gave Birth to 69 Children: The Extraordinary Story of Valentina Vassilyev

Imagine giving birth 27 times and becoming the mother of 69 children. That is the extraordinary story attributed to Valentina Vassilyev, an 18th-century Russian peasant whose reported family size remains one of the most astonishing records in history.
According to Guinness World Records, Vassilyev was the first wife of Feodor Vassilyev, a peasant who lived in Shuya, Russia. Historical accounts claim that between approximately 1725 and 1765, she gave birth to 69 children during 27 pregnancies.
The reported births included 16 sets of twins, seven sets of triplets and four sets of quadruplets. If accurate, these figures would mean that she gave birth to more children than most families could imagine raising in a lifetime.
Her story was reportedly documented in records associated with the Nikolsky Monastery, which were sent to Moscow in February 1782. The account also appeared in The Gentleman’s Magazine in 1783, helping spread the remarkable claim beyond Russia.
Yet one important mystery remains: despite her place in the record books, surprisingly little is known about Vassilyev herself. Even the name “Valentina” is uncertain. Guinness notes that historical sources identify her primarily as the first wife of Feodor Vassilyev, rather than consistently recording her first name.

There are also reasons to approach the story with caution. Although Guinness World Records recognizes the case as the highest officially recorded number of children born to one mother, it acknowledges that the figures are statistically extraordinary and should be treated carefully. The surviving historical accounts do not provide the kind of detailed medical documentation that would be expected today.
Feodor Vassilyev was also reported to have had 18 additional children with a second wife, bringing the total attributed to him across both marriages to 87.
Whether every detail of the story can be confirmed remains a matter of historical debate. Nevertheless, the reports have endured for centuries, making the Vassilyev family one of the most unusual cases in the history of childbirth.
Behind the astonishing numbers is a woman whose personal life remains largely unknown. Her story continues to fascinate readers not only because of the extraordinary number of children she reportedly had, but also because of the unanswered questions surrounding a life lived more than 250 years ago.
