SHE VANISHED DURING A SHORT HIKE — 17 DAYS LATER, RESCUERS SPOTTED HER ALIVE DEEP INSIDE A HAWAIIAN FOREST

When Amanda Eller set out for what was supposed to be a short hike in Hawaii, she had no idea that she would spend the next 17 days struggling to survive in the wilderness.

The 35-year-old yoga instructor and physical therapist disappeared on May 8, 2019, after entering the Makawao Forest Reserve on the island of Maui.

Her vehicle was later discovered in the parking area, but Amanda was nowhere to be found.

As days passed without any sign of her, friends, relatives and volunteers launched an extensive search. Then, more than two weeks after she vanished, a rescue helicopter spotted something extraordinary.

A woman was waving from the forest below.

A Short Walk Turns Into a Nightmare

Amanda had entered the forest intending to enjoy some time outdoors. She left her phone and wallet in her vehicle.

During her hike, she became disoriented and lost her way.

Without a phone, she could not contact anyone for help. The unfamiliar terrain made finding her way back increasingly difficult.

What began as an ordinary outing quickly became a fight for survival.

Seventeen Days Alone in the Wilderness

As Amanda tried to navigate the forest, she encountered steep terrain, thick vegetation and dangerous conditions.

She suffered injuries, including a fractured leg, and lost her shoes during the ordeal.

With no proper supplies, she relied on natural water sources and whatever food she could find, including wild fruit and plants.

Her physical condition deteriorated as the days passed.

Meanwhile, the people searching for her faced a difficult task: finding one missing person across a vast area of dense forest.

Friends Refused to Stop Searching

Amanda’s disappearance prompted a major volunteer search effort involving friends, community members and professional rescuers.

Search teams explored remote sections of the forest and surrounding terrain, hoping to discover evidence of where she might have travelled.

Her loved ones continued searching even as the number of days without contact increased.

On May 24, a privately funded helicopter search finally brought the breakthrough they had been hoping for.

A Woman Waving From the Forest Below

While flying over a remote section of the area, rescuers spotted Amanda near a stream and waterfall.

She was alive.

After 17 days missing, the search team had finally located her.

Footage from the rescue captured the emotional moment when searchers reached Amanda and realised that she had survived.

She was transported for medical treatment, suffering from injuries, dehydration and the effects of her prolonged ordeal.

The Homecoming Her Family Had Hoped For

Amanda’s rescue brought an extraordinary end to a search that had drawn widespread attention.

Her family and friends expressed immense relief that she had been found alive after more than two weeks in the wilderness.

Although she faced a period of physical recovery, Amanda had survived an experience that began with a short walk and became a 17-day struggle to stay alive.

Her story remains a remarkable example of endurance, community determination and the importance of search-and-rescue efforts.

For the people who spent days looking for her, the most unforgettable moment was simple: seeing Amanda alive again.
