Baby Boy Born in a Kyiv Shelter After Missile Strike Damages Maternity Ward

A baby boy was born in a shelter in Kyiv after a Russian strike damaged the maternity ward where his mother had been receiving care.

The baby was delivered on September 24, shortly after an explosion damaged part of a maternity clinic in Kyiv’s Podilskyi district. The clinic’s director told Reuters that the blast shattered windows and damaged the building, forcing staff and patients to take cover underground.

A Birth During an Emergency

Despite the damage, medical staff continued caring for patients. The baby was delivered safely in the shelter while the situation outside remained dangerous.

The clinic director said that nobody inside the maternity facility was injured in the attack.

The newborn’s arrival came only weeks after other babies were also born at Kyiv maternity hospitals while air-raid warnings were sounding across the city.

Families Continue to Welcome Newborns

Reuters recently documented several mothers giving birth in Kyiv while the city was under repeated air-raid alerts.

Among them was 32-year-old Alyona Bohatyrenko, who gave birth to a daughter while an air-raid alert was active. Another mother, 26-year-old Yuliia Ishchuk, gave birth to her son Yaroslav as Russian drone attacks continued.

The families described the experience as frightening, but medical teams continued providing care despite the conditions.

A New Life Amid Difficult Circumstances

The latest birth highlights how maternity staff in Kyiv continue working during attacks and emergencies. For the newborn boy and his family, his first hours of life began not in a normal delivery room, but in an underground shelter.

Reuters reported that the maternity ward suffered damage, but the medical team was able to protect patients and continue providing care.
