Alba Chavez Arrested in Florida After Kittens Allegedly Buried Alive in Hobe Sound
Florida Woman Accused of Burying Kittens Alive After Allegedly Calling Them “Demons”

A disturbing animal cruelty investigation in Florida has drawn widespread attention after deputies reportedly heard the cries of kittens buried beneath the ground while digging through a backyard during heavy rain.
Alba Chavez, 37, was arrested in Hobe Sound on October 8 and faces four felony counts of aggravated animal cruelty, according to PEOPLE and the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators allege that Chavez buried several kittens because she believed they were demonic. Three children living at the home reportedly tried to protect the animals by locking three kittens inside a bedroom before leaving for dinner. When they returned, the door had been forced open and the kittens were gone.
The children contacted authorities, who questioned Chavez. According to the arrest affidavit, she allegedly directed deputies to a spot in the backyard and told them they would need gloves, a bag and a shovel to find the cats.

Despite heavy rain and lightning, deputies began digging. They soon heard faint cries coming from underground.
Two kittens were discovered alive inside plastic bags, while two others were found dead. The surviving animals were rushed to an emergency veterinary facility for treatment for weakness and dehydration.

In a hopeful development, both rescued kittens were later reported to be recovering in foster care. However, another kitten remained missing in the latest reports, and investigators said additional charges could be considered if the animal was found dead.
Authorities have not established whether a mental health issue played a role in the alleged incident. Chavez remained in custody, and it was not immediately clear whether she had entered a plea or retained an attorney.
The case has also highlighted the courage of the children who contacted police despite their fears. Their call helped deputies locate the two kittens that survived.
