Man Arrested Nearly 10 Years After Young Man’s Murder as Witness Reveals Alleged Confession

WEST VIRGINIA — A nearly decade-old murder investigation has taken a significant turn following the arrest of a 65-year-old man accused of killing a young man whose remains were discovered in a remote mountainous area in 2016.

Richard William Nichols was arrested in Indiana on September 2, 2026, and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the death of Ivan “Vanya” Perlis, 25.

A Disturbing Discovery in the Mountains

On November 12, 2016, a hunter discovered human remains near Brushy Ridge Road in the Dolly Sods area of West Virginia.

Investigators recovered a skull containing evidence of three gunshot wounds to the back of the head.

Forensic examination indicated that Perlis had been killed between October 3 and October 5, 2016.

A Dispute Over a Bandana

According to the criminal complaint cited by local news outlets, Nichols and Perlis had been staying on the same property in Tucker County before the young man’s disappearance.

Investigators learned that the two had allegedly argued over a bandana belonging to a deceased friend.

During the confrontation, Nichols allegedly grabbed Perlis by the neck and shook him.

Nichols later acknowledged that an argument had occurred but claimed the men had subsequently reconciled.

Conflicting Accounts Raise Questions

During interviews with investigators, Nichols reportedly provided different accounts of the last time he saw Perlis.

In one version, he claimed to have driven the young man to meet an unidentified individual in the Dolly Sods area.

He later alleged that the individual had threatened them with a firearm and ordered him to leave.

Investigators continued examining the inconsistencies while seeking additional information about Perlis’ final movements.

Witness Reveals Alleged Confession

A significant development emerged during follow-up interviews with Lester Mook, who owned the property where the two men had been staying.

Mook allegedly told investigators that Nichols and Perlis had left together in a truck on the day Perlis disappeared, but Nichols returned alone several hours later.

During subsequent interviews in 2024, Mook claimed Nichols had returned wearing different clothing and had allegedly admitted to shooting Perlis three times.

According to the complaint, Mook also alleged that Nichols said he needed to burn clothing because it was covered in blood.

Mook reportedly explained that he had previously withheld certain information because he did not want to become involved in the investigation.

Suspect Arrested After Nearly a Decade

Investigators cited the witness statements and other information gathered during the lengthy investigation as grounds for Nichols’ arrest.

He is currently being held without bond at the Potomac Highlands Regional Jail in West Virginia.

The first-degree murder charge remains an allegation. Nichols is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
