Body Found Inside Barrel at Lake Mead Finally Identified After More Than 40 Years
LAS VEGAS — A chilling mystery that resurfaced when a rusted barrel was discovered along the shrinking shoreline of Lake Mead has taken a major step forward. Authorities have identified the man whose remains were found inside, more than four decades after he was killed.
The victim has been identified as Edward Lelburian Jackson, a man from Hot Springs, Arkansas, who investigators believe died in the early 1980s.
A Disturbing Discovery on the Shoreline
In May 2022, visitors discovered a barrel containing human remains along the shore of Lake Mead, near Las Vegas.
The discovery followed a significant decline in the reservoir’s water level, which exposed areas that had previously been submerged.
Investigators determined that the victim had suffered a gunshot wound to the head. His remains had been concealed inside the barrel for decades.
Investigators Finally Establish His Identity
For years, the man’s identity remained unknown.
Authorities turned to forensic genetic genealogy and other investigative techniques to help determine who he was. Information about clothing recovered with the remains also contributed to the investigation.
The victim was ultimately identified as Edward Lelburian Jackson, who was believed to have been in his mid-to-late 50s when he died.

A Family Left Without Answers for Decades
Jackson had last been seen by his family in Arkansas in the early 1980s.
According to investigators, his disappearance had not been formally reported because he was known to travel independently.
The identification now provides an answer to a question that remained unresolved for more than 40 years, although the circumstances surrounding his final days are still unclear.
Questions About the Killing Remain
The unusual circumstances of the discovery have attracted attention because Las Vegas was historically associated with organized crime.
However, authorities have not confirmed any connection between Jackson’s killing and organized crime. Such theories remain speculation rather than an established finding.
Investigators have also not publicly identified the person responsible for his death.

A Cold Case Moves Forward
Several sets of human remains have been discovered around Lake Mead as declining water levels exposed previously submerged locations. The circumstances surrounding those discoveries have varied.
Jackson’s identification represents an important breakthrough in one of the reservoir’s most widely discussed mysteries.
Although his name has finally been restored, investigators still face the challenge of determining who killed him and why his body was concealed inside the barrel.
