Jeffrey Dahmer Survivor Tracy Edwards Never Fully Recovered After His Terrifying Escape, Former Lawyer Says

In July 1991, Tracy Edwards escaped from the Milwaukee apartment of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer, helping police uncover one of the most notorious criminal cases in American history. But according to Edwards’ former defense attorney, the ordeal left a lasting impact on his life.

Edwards managed to flee Dahmer’s apartment with a handcuff still attached to his wrist. He flagged down police officers and told them that Dahmer had threatened to kill him. His escape prompted officers to investigate the apartment, where they discovered evidence that exposed Dahmer’s crimes.

Dahmer later admitted to killing 17 men and boys between 1978 and 1991. He was convicted of 15 murders in Wisconsin and received multiple life sentences. In 1994, he was killed by another inmate while serving his sentence.

Years after the escape, Edwards’ former attorney, Paul Ksicinski, told Fox News that his client appeared unable to rebuild his life after the traumatic encounter. Ksicinski described Edwards as someone who struggled with substance abuse and homelessness, adding that the experience seemed to follow him long after Dahmer was captured.

During Dahmer’s 1992 trial, Edwards described the terrifying moments inside the apartment, including Dahmer threatening him with a knife and saying he intended to eat his heart. His testimony helped the public understand the danger he had faced that night.

Edwards later encountered other legal troubles, including a 2011 case involving the death of a homeless man. His attorney disputed the allegation that Edwards had thrown the man from a bridge. Edwards was eventually convicted of a reduced charge of aiding a felon and sentenced to prison.

Ksicinski said he believed Edwards continued to carry the emotional burden of what happened. The last time the attorney recalled seeing him was in 2015, and Edwards’ whereabouts were not known when Fox News published its report in October 2022.

The story is a reminder that surviving a traumatic event does not necessarily mean escaping its consequences. Edwards’ account remains an important part of the history surrounding Dahmer’s crimes.
