Part 2: The Highway Showdown

“Dispatch, this is Unit 4!” Miles’s voice echoed sharply through the radio, crisp and unshakeable despite his trembling hands. “Requesting immediate supervisor on scene. Code Red. Deputy Gity is drawing his sidearm on an unarmed bystander!”

Garrett froze mid-draw, spinning around with rage blazing in his eyes. “What the hell do you think you’re doing, rookie?!” he bellowed, striding back toward the patrol unit like a predator cornered. “Cancel that call right now, or I swear to God I will ruin your career before it even starts!”

“I won’t,” Miles replied, stepping directly into Garrett’s path and positioning himself between his partner and Ruth. His fingers rested firmly on his taser holster. “You’re completely out of control, Garrett. The dashcam is running, that woman is filming, and you just destroyed personal property on an unprovoked traffic stop. This ends right now!”

While Garrett snarled and lunged forward to shove his junior partner out of the way, a low rumble of high-powered engines began to vibrate through the asphalt beneath my bruised cheek.

Far down the deserted highway, three unmarked black SUVs tore through the rising heat waves, traveling well over ninety miles per hour. No sirens blared, no lights flashed—just pitch-black glass and relentless, unstoppable speed.

Garrett turned toward the approaching convoy, a flicker of genuine panic finally crossing his face. “Who called in state troopers?” he muttered under his breath.

The three heavy vehicles pulled up in a precise tactical delta formation, effectively boxing in both Garrett’s patrol cruiser and my shattered Phantom. Before the swirling dust even settled, six heavily armed operators in tactical body armor bearing bold gold letters—U.S. MARSHALS / DOJ—poured out, weapons raised with absolute discipline.

“FEDERAL AGENTS! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! GET ON THE GROUND NOW!”

Garrett’s jaw dropped in disbelief. “Wait! I’m local law enforcement! I’m Deputy Gity, I’m securing a grand theft suspect—”

“ON THE GROUND! NOW!” commanded a towering agent stepping out from the lead vehicle. It was Special Agent-in-Charge Marcus Vance, my direct regional supervisor. His eyes swept the chaotic scene, instantly locking onto me lying handcuffed in the gravel beside my ruined luxury car. His expression hardened into pure ice.

Garrett, suddenly realizing the horrific scale of his blunder, slowly lowered his handgun as his hands began to visibly shake. “Look, officers… she was driving a million-dollar car with no ID on her…”

“She couldn’t show her credentials because they were locked inside her purse in the trunk—a area you never bothered to check!” Miles interjected clearly, raising his hands high and stepping away from Garrett. “She identified herself as a federal agent from the moment you pulled her over. You refused to listen and smashed her vehicle.”

Marcus didn’t waste another second. “Disarm him!” he barked. Two federal Marshals slammed Garrett face-down against his own hood—the exact same brutal treatment he had subjected me to—snapping steel cuffs around his wrists while he screamed in desperation about police immunity.

Marcus rushed to my side, kneeling in the dirt and using his master key to release my handcuffs. “Renata… God, look at you. Are you alright?”

“I’ll survive, Marcus,” I rasped out, rubbing my swollen, dark-purple wrists as he helped me sit up. “Secure Ruth’s phone footage immediately… and make sure Deputy Ansar’s cruiser dashcam is impounded as evidence. He saved lives today.”
