HE GAVE A KIDNEY TO A COMPLETE STRANGER — AND HIS DECISION HELPED CHANGE SEVEN LIVES
Australian man Hu Pennington made a decision that most people would never imagine making: he voluntarily donated one of his kidneys to someone he had never met.
He did not know the recipient’s name or personal circumstances. He simply knew that someone needed a transplant and that he might be able to help.
What followed was even more remarkable. His donation helped initiate a chain of seven kidney transplants, extending the impact of one extraordinary decision far beyond a single recipient.
A Surgery He Was Nervous to Tell His Family About
On the morning of his operation, Hu was preparing to undergo surgery to remove a healthy kidney.
Although he believed strongly in his decision, he admitted feeling nervous. He had initially hesitated to tell family members and friends, uncertain how they would react to his willingness to undergo major surgery for a stranger.
When he eventually shared his plans, most people responded with encouragement and support.
Hu was discharged from hospital three days after the procedure.
Why Would Someone Donate a Kidney to a Stranger?
Hu’s decision was influenced by effective altruism, an approach that encourages people to consider how their resources and actions can achieve meaningful benefits for others.
He serves on the board of Effective Altruism Australia and believes that helping others can involve more than donating spare money or volunteering occasionally.
For Hu, learning about the challenges faced by people living with kidney failure helped shape his decision.
He also recognised that many carefully screened living kidney donors can continue living healthy lives with one kidney, although donation involves medical risks and requires thorough individual assessment.

One Kidney Starts a Chain of Seven Transplants
Hu’s donation became part of a kidney exchange chain, in which one donation can help make additional compatible transplants possible.
According to ABC News, his decision contributed to a chain involving seven transplant recipients.
Hu does not personally know the people who received the organs. However, he later received an anonymous letter from one recipient describing how dramatically their life had changed.
It was a tangible reminder that the consequences of his decision extended well beyond the operating room.
He Also Pledged 10% of His Income for Life
Donating a kidney was not Hu’s only commitment to helping others.
He has also pledged to contribute 10 per cent of his income throughout his life to causes focused on global health and development.
His charitable interests include efforts to reduce preventable diseases, such as supporting access to mosquito nets in regions affected by malaria.
Hu acknowledges that maintaining a lifelong financial commitment can be challenging, particularly when living expenses increase. Nevertheless, he considers it an important personal priority.
An Extraordinary Gift With a Lasting Impact
Altruistic kidney donation remains relatively uncommon in Australia.
According to figures cited by ABC News, only 15 people made altruistic kidney donations through the Australian and New Zealand Kidney Exchange program between 2022 and 2025.
Hu’s experience illustrates how one carefully considered act of generosity can have consequences far beyond the original intention.
He gave one kidney to a person he had never met. Through the resulting transplant chain, seven people received an opportunity for a different future.
For Hu, that knowledge has become a lasting source of meaning in his own life.
