Eight-Year-Old Boy Honored After Helping Save His Family in Car Crash

An eight-year-old boy has been honored as a young hero after helping his mother and younger brother following a serious car crash.

Hugo, from Cambridgeshire, was traveling in a car with his mother and brother when the vehicle was involved in a collision in May 2024.

Helping His Family Despite Being Injured

Although Hugo suffered broken bones in the crash, he managed to act when his family needed help.

According to his aunt Laurinda, Hugo freed his younger brother from his seat belt and smashed the car’s windows so people outside could reach them.

He was in severe pain and frightened, but continued trying to help until rescuers were able to assist the family.

Recognized as a Young Hero

Hugo was later presented with the Young Hero Award at the 2026 BBC Radio Cambridgeshire Make a Difference Awards.

The awards recognize people and community groups whose actions have made a difference to others.

For Hugo’s family, the recognition is a reflection of what he did during one of the most frightening moments of their lives.

A Moment His Family Will Never Forget

Hugo’s aunt said that despite being badly hurt and terrified, he managed to help create a way for his family to be reached by people outside the vehicle.

His actions have now become a story of courage that his family and community continue to remember.

At just eight years old, Hugo has received an award for an act that happened when he was facing fear and pain himself.
