Mystery Driver Rescues 89-Year-Old From Burning House and Disappears

GISBORNE, New Zealand — October 3, 2026 — Police in Gisborne are searching for an unidentified man who pulled an 89-year-old resident from a burning house early Saturday morning, then left the scene before emergency responders could speak with him.

He Stopped When He Saw the Fire

Emergency services were alerted to a fully involved house fire on Aberdeen Road at approximately 1 a.m.

According to New Zealand Police, the man was driving past when he noticed the blaze. He stopped his vehicle, entered the burning building and found the elderly resident inside.

The stranger then pulled the 89-year-old to safety through a window before leaving the area.

Police Want to Thank Him

When emergency crews arrived, the rescuer was already gone. Police said they have not yet been able to identify or speak with him.

Detective Senior Sergeant John Love said police want to find the man so they can thank him for his quick actions.

The rescued resident was taken to hospital for further assessment and observation. Police and Fire and Emergency New Zealand later examined the scene.

A Search for an Unknown Rescuer

Police are asking anyone who may know the man’s identity or have relevant information to contact them.

The unusual rescue has attracted attention because the passerby did not wait for recognition or assistance after getting the elderly resident out of the burning house. His identity remains unknown as authorities continue their search.

New Zealand Police confirmed the rescue in a statement released on October 3. The agency described the unidentified passerby as someone whose quick thinking helped bring the 89-year-old to safety.
