Las Vegas Man Sentenced to Life Without Parole After Killing His Grandmother and Two Others

A Las Vegas man has been sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after admitting to killing three people, including his 80-year-old grandmother, in a case that left victims’ relatives devastated and demanding justice.
Spencer McDonald, 32, pleaded guilty but mentally ill to three murder charges in July 2025. He was sentenced in August 2025 for the deaths of his grandmother, Dina Vail, 80; her partner, Andrew “AJ” Graden, 43; and apartment maintenance worker Christopher Brassard, 45.
According to court records cited in reports, the killings began in June 2023 at Vail’s apartment in Las Vegas. Prosecutors said McDonald attacked his grandmother with a sword and a kitchen knife. Her partner was also killed, and investigators later discovered the bodies after concerns arose when Vail failed to attend a ballet class.
The violence continued when maintenance workers entered the apartment to conduct a welfare check. Brassard was fatally attacked, while another worker managed to escape and seek help.
Authorities said McDonald remained in the apartment for days after the first two killings. The case came to light after Vail’s absence raised concerns among people who knew her.
At the sentencing hearing, McDonald attempted to explain his actions, referring to fears surrounding the potential side effects of medication he believed he might need to take to restore his disability benefits.
But relatives of the victims expressed deep anger and grief in court. Graden’s sister told the judge that her family would feel his absence for the rest of their lives and said the loss was unforgivable.
Under the plea agreement, McDonald will also receive specialized mental health treatment and be housed separately from other inmates until professionals determine he is fit to join the general prison population.

The case has left three families facing an irreversible loss. For the victims’ loved ones, the life sentence marks a legal conclusion, but it cannot undo the devastating consequences of the violence.
