2-Year-Old Girl’s Heart Stopped After a Fever — Now Her Big Sister Is Helping Save Her Life

What began as an ordinary fever turned into a devastating medical emergency for a Colorado family when their little daughter’s heart stopped just hours after arriving at the hospital.

Two-year-old Phoebe Picon was eventually diagnosed with a rare genetic blood disorder, beginning a difficult journey involving chemotherapy, blood transfusions and a bone marrow transplant from her six-year-old sister.

A Simple Fever Turns Into a Life-Threatening Emergency

In October 2025, Naomi and Jon Picon took their daughter Phoebe to the hospital after she developed a fever.

Within hours, her condition deteriorated dramatically. Doctors had to place the little girl on a ventilator, and her heart stopped.

Her parents later described the terrifying experience of watching their daughter fight for survival.

Further testing revealed that Phoebe had hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), a rare disorder in which the immune system becomes dangerously overactive and can damage the body’s organs.

Months of Treatment and a Sister’s Extraordinary Gift

Phoebe’s diagnosis marked the beginning of months of intensive medical care.

Her treatment included chemotherapy, blood transfusions and a bone marrow transplant using cells donated by her older sister, Sharley.

Sharley, who was just six years old, became an important part of her younger sister’s fight against the disease.

Following the transplant, their mother explained that the girls now share the same DNA in their blood.

Hope Turns Into Another Heartbreaking Setback

For a period, the family’s hopes appeared to be coming true.

Phoebe was declared to be in remission during the summer of 2026, bringing relief after months of painful treatment and uncertainty.

However, approximately one month later, the family learned that her remission had not lasted.

Now, Phoebe faces another round of chemotherapy and medical procedures. Her older sister is also expected to undergo further procedures as part of the treatment process.

A Family Fighting for Their Little Girl

The medical crisis has affected every aspect of the Picon family’s life.

Phoebe’s father, Jon, took leave from his position with the Denver Police Department while the family followed strict precautions to protect their daughter’s weakened immune system.

Despite the uncertainty surrounding her recovery, her parents remain hopeful and are sharing her experience to raise awareness of HLH.

They hope other families will recognize that seemingly ordinary symptoms can sometimes signal a serious underlying condition.

For Phoebe, the journey is far from over. But she continues to face it surrounded by her parents and a big sister who has already played an extraordinary role in helping her fight for life.
