81-Year-Old Mississippi Man Killed With His Own Gun During Home Invasion as Sheriff Questions Possible Motive

An 81-year-old Mississippi man was fatally shot with his own gun during a terrifying home invasion while he and his wife were asleep. Investigators are examining the circumstances surrounding the attack, including whether the alleged intruder may have been influenced by religious beliefs.
Bobby McGill was at home with his wife, Peggy, when Eric Basco allegedly broke into their residence at around 4 a.m. on Thursday, according to Union County Sheriff Jimmy Edwards.
Authorities said McGill struggled with the intruder, who reportedly gained control of the homeowner’s pistol and shot him multiple times. Peggy managed to escape the house and call 911 for help.
Basco later shot himself inside the home and was taken to a hospital, where he died, according to the sheriff.
Although investigators believe burglary may have been the primary motive, a disturbing video recorded the previous evening has raised additional questions. The footage reportedly showed Basco walking along a road near the couple’s home, raising his hands and shouting words that sounded like “God is dead.”
Sheriff Edwards stressed that investigators could not confirm exactly what Basco said or whether religion played any role in the attack. He also noted that a cross and a sign reading “Jesus is Lord” stood in McGill’s yard, but emphasized that there was no established evidence linking those items to the break-in.
Authorities said Basco had no known criminal history beyond minor traffic violations. Investigators are continuing to piece together what happened and why the couple’s home was targeted.

McGill’s family remembered him as a devoted Christian who deeply loved his family. His granddaughter shared a tribute describing him as a man who lived his faith openly and made sure those around him knew how much his beliefs meant to him.
The case has left the community grieving and searching for answers. While investigators have raised questions about a possible motive, they have not established that religion played a role in the deadly attack.
