Teen Suspected of Killing 10-Year-Old Boy and Stepmother Was Identified Years Ago, but a Legal Loophole Delayed Charges

For nearly two decades, the brutal killings of a 10-year-old boy and his stepmother in Indiana remained unsolved. Investigators eventually identified a suspect, but an unusual gap in state law reportedly prevented prosecutors from moving forward for years.

On July 24, 2006, Blake Dickus, 10, and his 26-year-old stepmother, Chynna Dickus, were found stabbed to death inside their home in Franklin, Indiana. Blake had also suffered blunt-force injuries, according to reports.

The case remained open for years as investigators pursued leads and examined possible connections to burglaries in the surrounding area. Despite extensive efforts, no arrest was made for a long time.

Authorities have now charged Michael Jerome James, who was just 14 years old at the time of the killings. Prosecutors allege that he was responsible for both deaths and that the killings occurred during a burglary or attempted burglary.

According to Johnson County Prosecutor Lance Hamner, investigators had identified James as a suspect years earlier. However, Indiana’s laws governing juvenile cases created a complicated legal obstacle. Because James was a minor when the crimes allegedly occurred and was not charged through the juvenile system at the time, prosecutors faced uncertainty over whether he could later be prosecuted in adult court.

A change to state law in 2023 failed to resolve the issue after courts rejected its application in another case. Lawmakers subsequently passed a revised law in 2025, providing prosecutors with a new legal route to bring charges against James.

The suspect was indicted on four counts of murder and appeared in court in October 2026. He remains in custody as the case proceeds, while the precise evidence that led investigators to him has not been publicly disclosed.

The case has also brought renewed attention to the family’s long wait for answers. For years, Blake’s loved ones continued seeking information about the killings, hoping that investigators would eventually identify the person responsible.

Although the indictment marks a significant development in the investigation, the allegations have yet to be resolved at trial. The legal dispute over whether the case can proceed in adult court may also prove important to the prosecution.
