Attorney Accused in Jennifer Dulos Disappearance Was Released to Visit His Sick Father — Years Later, His Case Took an Unexpected Turn

In October 2020, Kent Mawhinney, a Connecticut attorney accused of conspiring in the disappearance and presumed murder of Jennifer Dulos, was released from jail under strict conditions so he could visit his seriously ill father in Florida. At the time, he was facing a major criminal charge in a case that had captivated the public for more than a year.
Mawhinney was a former attorney for Fotis Dulos, Jennifer’s estranged husband, who had been charged with her murder before dying by suicide in January 2020. Investigators alleged that Mawhinney and Fotis had been involved in a conspiracy connected to Jennifer’s disappearance. Mawhinney pleaded not guilty and denied the allegations.
A Mother Who Vanished Without a Trace
Jennifer Dulos, a 50-year-old mother of five, disappeared on May 24, 2019, after dropping her children off at school in New Canaan, Connecticut. Her vehicle was later found abandoned, and investigators discovered blood evidence in the garage of her home.
Authorities believed she had been attacked at home and that her body had subsequently been disposed of. Despite extensive searches, her remains have never been found.
At the time, Jennifer and Fotis were involved in a contentious divorce and child-custody dispute. Court documents showed that Jennifer had previously expressed fears about her estranged husband.
Fotis was arrested and charged with murder, kidnapping and other offenses in January 2020. He died days later after an apparent suicide attempt, leaving the investigation without a trial against him.
Why Mawhinney Was Released
Mawhinney had been jailed since his arrest in January 2020. In October, a judge agreed to reduce his bond from $2 million to $246,000, allowing him to leave custody under strict conditions.
The decision came after his lawyers explained that his 86-year-old father was battling lymphoma and prostate cancer that had spread to his spine and ribs. Mawhinney was granted permission to travel to Florida for a visit.
He was fitted with a GPS monitoring device, required to surrender his passport and had to obtain permission for travel. His parents also put up their home as collateral to help secure his release.
Mawhinney declined to answer reporters’ questions as he left the courthouse. At that stage, he continued to deny the conspiracy allegations against him.

The Case Took Another Turn Years Later
The legal situation changed significantly in June 2025. Prosecutors dropped the felony conspiracy-to-commit-murder charge against Mawhinney, saying they did not have sufficient evidence to prove it.
Mawhinney then pleaded guilty under an Alford plea to a misdemeanor charge of interfering with police. Under this type of plea, a defendant accepts the legal consequences of a conviction without admitting the underlying conduct.
He received an 11-month sentence, equivalent to the time he had already spent in custody awaiting trial. He was not required to return to prison.
The outcome ended the criminal proceedings against Mawhinney in connection with the case, but it did not resolve every question surrounding Jennifer’s disappearance. Her family and friends have continued to seek answers about what happened to her and where her remains might be.
A Case That Still Has Unanswered Questions
Jennifer was legally declared dead in October 2023, more than four years after she vanished. Her former husband died before he could stand trial, while his former girlfriend, Michelle Troconis, was convicted in 2024 of conspiracy to commit murder and other offenses. She received a sentence of more than 14 years.
Mawhinney’s case illustrates how a high-profile investigation can evolve over several years, with allegations, evidence and legal outcomes changing as prosecutors reassess what they can prove.
For Jennifer’s five children and the people who loved her, however, one central question remains unanswered: where is Jennifer Dulos?
