Retired NYPD Detective Arrested After Fatal Shooting on George Washington Bridge — What Investigators Know

A deadly shooting on the George Washington Bridge has led to the arrest of a retired New York City police detective, raising questions about what happened during a suspected road-rage confrontation on one of the region’s busiest crossings.
Victor Romero, 62, was arrested on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, and charged with murder in the death of Koran Irvine, a 46-year-old Con Edison employee from Valley Cottage, New York.
According to the New York Police Department, officers responded shortly after 7 p.m. on Tuesday, October 20, to reports of a man being shot on the bridge’s outbound upper-level roadway, heading toward New Jersey.
When officers arrived, they found Irvine unconscious and unresponsive in the driver’s seat of his vehicle. He had suffered a gunshot wound to the back of his right shoulder and was taken to Englewood Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Police later identified Romero as the suspect and took him into custody. Authorities said the shooting appeared to be connected to a road-rage incident, although investigators were still working to establish the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
Romero reportedly retired from the NYPD approximately 25 years ago. According to the Associated Press, he had previously worked as a detective and was wounded during an off-duty shooting in 2000 when men attempted to rob his family’s laundromat in Brooklyn.
Irvine’s death has devastated those who knew him. Con Edison expressed condolences to his family, friends and colleagues, describing the loss of its employee as a senseless act of violence.
A fundraising page created for Irvine’s loved ones remembered him as a devoted husband, father and friend. He leaves behind his wife, Patricia, and their children, Lea and Hiro.

The investigation into the bridge shooting remains focused on determining exactly what led to the fatal encounter. Although Romero has been charged with murder, the allegations against him have not been proven in court.
