Baby Boy Born With Dark Marks Across His Skin Had Already Suffered a Stroke Before Birth
When Desirae Lockwood welcomed her baby boy Jensen, his appearance revealed an unusual medical condition that would require far more than routine newborn care.
Dark, mole-like patches were visible across his skin. But what doctors discovered beneath the surface was even more concerning.
Jensen also had abnormal pigment-producing cells affecting his brain, and his mother learned that he had suffered a stroke before he was born.
A Rare Condition Visible From Birth
Jensen was born with a rare condition involving extensive pigmented marks on his skin.
Unlike ordinary small birthmarks, the condition involved multiple dark patches and required medical assessment beyond their visible appearance.
For his mother, Desirae, who worked as a neonatal intensive care nurse at Bryan Medical Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, the diagnosis introduced a deeply personal medical journey.
She was familiar with caring for vulnerable newborns professionally. This time, however, the baby needing specialist attention was her own son.
Doctors Discover His Brain Is Also Affected
Jensen’s condition was not limited to his skin.
Medical investigations revealed that pigment-producing cells were also present in his brain.
His mother reported that Jensen had suffered a stroke before birth, making his medical history especially concerning.
The family needed to monitor not only the visible changes to his skin but also his neurological development.
He continued receiving specialist care through Children’s Hospital in Omaha.

A Mother Faces an Uncertain Journey
For parents of children with complex congenital conditions, the challenges can extend well beyond the initial diagnosis.
Desirae had to balance the emotional demands of motherhood with the knowledge that her son required ongoing medical attention.
Although Jensen’s unusual birthmarks were immediately noticeable, his neurological health remained an equally important part of his care.
Regular specialist assessments helped his family follow his development and address potential complications.
The Little Boy Behind the Medical Diagnosis
When KETV News shared Jensen’s story in August 2023, his mother described a baby whose personality brought her enormous joy.
Despite the frightening discoveries surrounding his birth, Jensen was smiling, laughing and eating well.
His mother said he was approaching 19 pounds and continued showing the happy personality his family loved.
Doctors also described him positively, while continuing to monitor his skin and brain conditions.
His progress offered his family encouraging moments amid an ongoing medical journey.
Why His Story Matters
Jensen’s experience highlights an important reality about certain rare congenital skin conditions: what appears on the outside may be only one part of a child’s medical picture.
While his dark birthmarks are visually distinctive, his story is also about neurological care, family support and the importance of monitoring children with complex diagnoses.
For Desirae, the most meaningful moments were the ordinary ones — watching her son smile, laugh and continue growing.
