Colorado Woman Killed by a Rock Thrown Through Her Windshield — The Teenagers’ Alleged Reaction Shocked Investigators

A 20-year-old Colorado woman was driving home when a large landscaping rock smashed through her windshield, killing her in a seemingly random attack. Investigators later uncovered details that made the case even more disturbing.

Alexa Bartell was killed on April 19, 2023, while driving in Jefferson County, northwest of Denver. According to court documents, a group of teenagers had allegedly been driving around throwing heavy rocks at moving vehicles that night.

Bartell was talking to a friend on the phone when the conversation abruptly stopped. Concerned, her friend used a phone-tracking app to locate her and eventually found her car in a field. Bartell was inside with a fatal head injury.

Authorities said at least seven vehicles were struck during the series of attacks, and other people were injured.

Three teenagers — Joseph Koenig, Nicholas “Mitch” Karol-Chik and Zachary Kwak — were arrested and charged in connection with Bartell’s death. All three were 18 at the time of their arrests.

According to arrest affidavits, the group allegedly returned to the scene after Bartell’s car crashed. Investigators said one of the teenagers took a photograph of the wreck, reportedly as a “memento.” The documents also described alleged efforts by the suspects to coordinate their accounts of what had happened.

The case raised questions about how a seemingly reckless night of rock throwing could end in a fatality. Prosecutors alleged that the attacks were deliberate and charged the defendants with first-degree murder, along with attempted murder and assault offenses connected to other vehicles.

The cases later took different paths. In May 2024, Kwak pleaded guilty to assault-related charges under an agreement that dropped the original murder charges against him. In a separate trial in 2025, Koenig was convicted of first-degree murder and other offenses. Karol-Chik also entered a plea agreement in the case.

For Bartell’s family and friends, the loss was devastating. She had been just 20 years old, with her life ahead of her, when a rock thrown at a passing car ended it.

The case remains a stark reminder that throwing objects at moving vehicles can have deadly consequences, even when those responsible may treat the act as a prank or a game.
