NYC Marathon Runner, 28, Stabbed in the Neck Just Minutes Before Meeting Her Parents

A 28-year-old New York woman was left fighting for her life after being stabbed multiple times in the neck while training for the New York City Marathon.
Katie Suarez was running alone along the Shore Parkway Greenway in Brooklyn on the evening of October 30, 2026, when she was attacked. The assault happened shortly after 8 p.m. near Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue, according to police.
Earlier that evening, Suarez had met her mother near her workplace after finishing her shift. She later went out for a run while waiting to meet her parents. Around 8 p.m., she spoke with them by phone and reportedly said she was about half a mile away from their meeting point.
When she failed to arrive and stopped answering calls, her parents became worried and went looking for her. Her father eventually found her lying on the waterfront path with serious stab wounds to her neck.
Emergency responders rushed Suarez to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn, where she was admitted in critical condition. Reports said she remained on life support as doctors treated her injuries.
Police have not identified a suspect or established a motive. Investigators believe the attack may have been random, but that has not been confirmed.
The NYPD has been searching the area for evidence, deploying detectives, K-9 units, drones and scuba teams. Officers have also appealed to the public for information, particularly from anyone who was near the eastbound bike path between Bay 8th Street and Bay 17th Street between 7:56 p.m. and 8:12 p.m.
A reward of up to $10,000 has been offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction, according to FOX 5 New York.
The attack has shaken the local running community, particularly because Suarez was reportedly preparing for the New York City Marathon. Her case has also raised concerns about safety along the waterfront trail, where some runners and cyclists say lighting and surveillance are limited.

For her family, the evening run turned into a desperate search for their daughter. Police continue to ask anyone with information to come forward as the investigation remains ongoing.
