Father Accused of Killing Sheriff’s Deputy One Day After Police Fatally Shot His Son

A tragic chain of events in Cincinnati, Ohio, left an 18-year-old young man and a veteran sheriff’s deputy dead within two days, prompting separate investigations into both deaths.
Rodney Hinton Jr., 38, was accused of deliberately driving his vehicle into Hamilton County Sheriff’s Deputy Larry Henderson on May 2, 2025, while the deputy was directing traffic near the University of Cincinnati. Henderson was taken to hospital but later died from his injuries.
The incident happened one day after Hinton’s son, 18-year-old Ryan Hinton, was fatally shot by a Cincinnati police officer during an investigation involving a suspected stolen vehicle. Police said Ryan had run from officers and was holding a handgun when the shooting occurred. The circumstances surrounding the teenager’s death became a separate subject of scrutiny.
According to prosecutors, Rodney Hinton had viewed body-camera footage of his son’s shooting earlier on the day the deputy was struck. Authorities alleged that he later drove toward Henderson, who was working a traffic detail ahead of a university commencement ceremony.
Hinton was arrested and initially charged with aggravated murder. Prosecutors later announced additional charges, including a second aggravated-murder count. He was held without bond as the case proceeded.

Henderson had retired after 33 years with the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office but continued working special assignments. Officials and colleagues remembered him as a dedicated public servant whose death deeply affected the law-enforcement community.
Ryan Hinton’s family expressed grief over both deaths while seeking further answers about the police shooting. Their attorney described the body-camera footage as disturbing and said the family wanted an independent examination of the circumstances.
The two deaths led to separate investigations: one into the fatal police shooting of Ryan Hinton and another into the crash that killed Deputy Henderson. Authorities urged the public to distinguish the cases and avoid spreading unverified claims about the events.
