Vintage Porsche Driver, 70, Killed in Nebraska Crash After Pickup Truck Runs Red Light

A 70-year-old classic-car enthusiast has died following a collision in Omaha, Nebraska, after a pickup truck allegedly ran a red light and struck his vintage Porsche 911.
The victim, Christopher Szalkowski, was reportedly driving his blue Porsche on a sunny day when the pickup truck collided with his car. He sustained critical injuries and was taken to hospital, where he later died.
Szalkowski was known locally for his passion for European cars and for running European Motors, an automotive repair business with his wife, Katrina. His death has left family members and members of the local car community mourning the loss of a man whose life revolved around automobiles.
Authorities identified the pickup truck driver as 32-year-old Jose Ortega-Romero. According to reports, he did not present U.S. identification documents at the scene and did not have a valid driver’s licence.
Ortega-Romero was reportedly charged with running a red light, driving without a licence and misdemeanor motor vehicle homicide. The charges relate to the fatal collision, and the case remains subject to the legal process.
The incident also drew the attention of federal immigration authorities. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reportedly placed a detainer on Ortega-Romero. After he posted bond, the Nebraska State Patrol took custody of him and arranged his transfer to another county jail for immigration processing.

The crash has prompted renewed discussion about road safety and immigration enforcement, while those who knew Szalkowski are left remembering the man behind the wheel of the distinctive vintage Porsche.
