Doctors Operated on Her Brain Before She Was Even Born — Two Days Later, Baby Denver Entered the World

Baby Denver made medical history before she had even taken her first breath.

During a routine ultrasound at 30 weeks of pregnancy, her parents, Kenyatta and Derek, learned that their unborn daughter had an enlarged heart and a rare abnormality involving the blood vessels in her brain.

The condition, known as vein of Galen malformation, could place her life in danger immediately after birth.

Her parents soon faced an extraordinary decision: whether to allow doctors to treat their daughter’s brain while she was still inside her mother’s womb.

A Frightening Discovery at 30 Weeks

Kenyatta and Derek were living in Louisiana when doctors discovered Denver’s condition.

A vein of Galen malformation occurs when abnormal connections form between blood vessels deep inside the developing brain.

These connections can cause excessive blood flow, placing significant strain on a baby’s heart.

In severe cases, affected newborns can develop heart failure and other life-threatening complications.

Denver’s enlarged heart was already a concerning sign.

Traveling to Boston in Search of Hope

After learning about the diagnosis, Denver’s parents discovered that Dr. Darren Orbach, a specialist experienced in treating vein of Galen malformations, worked at Boston Children’s Hospital.

They contacted his team and learned that Denver might qualify for a groundbreaking fetal procedure.

Family and friends cared for the couple’s three older children while Kenyatta and Derek traveled from Louisiana to Boston.

Additional examinations showed that the abnormal blood vessel connection was growing, although Denver’s brain tissue had not yet been damaged.

Her medical team determined that the time had come to intervene.

A Brain Procedure While She Was Still in the Womb

Doctors performed a specialized procedure designed to reduce the abnormal blood flow before Denver was born.

Using ultrasound guidance, the team treated the vascular malformation while Kenyatta remained pregnant.

The intervention took approximately 20 minutes.

Kenyatta watched the procedure unfold on an ultrasound screen.

According to the hospital, Denver’s condition improved immediately afterward.

Born Just Two Days Later

Two days after the procedure, Denver entered the world.

Boston Children’s Hospital identified her as the first baby in North America to successfully undergo this groundbreaking treatment before birth.

Her case demonstrated the potential of intervening before a dangerous vascular abnormality causes severe complications in a newborn.

However, the procedure is highly specialized and is not suitable for every pregnancy involving this diagnosis.

A Family Finally Takes Their Daughter Home

Denver remained in the hospital for several weeks after birth while doctors monitored her progress and waited for her to meet important developmental and medical milestones.

She eventually became well enough to return home with her family.

For Kenyatta and Derek, the experience carried meaning beyond their daughter’s successful treatment.

They hoped Denver’s story would help medical teams develop new opportunities for other babies facing the same dangerous condition.

The little girl who underwent a pioneering procedure before birth had become part of a medical advance that could influence fetal care in the future.
