Dentist Gunned Down After Patient Allegedly Blamed Him for a Loose Tooth — Suspect Later Killed in Police Shootout

A dentist in northern Mexico was shot dead in a shocking attack allegedly carried out by a former patient who blamed him for leaving a tooth loose. Days later, the suspect was killed during a confrontation with police, according to Mexican authorities.

Dr. Amed de Jesús Preciado Hernández, 42, was killed on October 15, 2026, in Nogales, Sonora, near the US-Mexico border. Investigators identified the alleged gunman as Ernesto Rascón, 30, a US citizen who lived in Prescott, Arizona.

According to Sonora investigators, Rascón had previously received dental treatment from Hernández. He allegedly returned to the clinic demanding immediate attention over a complaint involving a loose tooth. When the dentist was unable to see him at that moment, investigators said the suspect left and waited for him to come outside.

Security camera footage reportedly captured the fatal encounter. Hernández was in his pickup truck when the gunman approached and fired repeatedly through the windshield and toward the driver’s side. The dentist died from the attack.

Authorities obtained an arrest warrant the following day and began searching for Rascón. Investigators eventually located him at a residence in Agua Prieta, another city in Sonora, on October 17.

Officials said Rascón opened fire as police attempted to arrest him, injuring two officers. Authorities returned fire, killing the suspect at the scene. The injured officers were reported to have received medical treatment.

Investigators have described a dispute connected to the dental treatment as a possible motive. Authorities also said Rascón had a criminal history in the United States involving drug-related offenses.

The killing has shocked the local community, turning what investigators described as a disagreement over dental care into a fatal act of violence. The case also highlights the challenges authorities faced in locating the American suspect across the border.
