Girl Born With a Massive Facial Growth Gets Life-Changing Surgery After a Stranger Helps Her Family Find Doctors Thousands of Miles Away
For six-year-old Negalem, growing up in a small Ethiopian village meant living with a medical condition that became increasingly dangerous with every passing year.
She was born with a vascular abnormality on her face. Initially small, the growth gradually expanded until it covered much of one side of her face and reached approximately the size of a cantaloupe.
Her family had limited access to advanced medical care, and doctors feared the enormous mass could eventually threaten her ability to eat, breathe and survive.
A Small Growth That Became Life-Threatening
Negalem was diagnosed with a cavernous venous malformation, a benign but potentially dangerous abnormality involving blood vessels.
Unlike cancer, the condition does not spread through the body. However, the growth continued expanding and affected the surrounding facial structures.
As it became larger, the fragile blood vessels created a serious risk of potentially fatal bleeding.
The mass also threatened to interfere with swallowing and breathing.
An Unexpected Stranger Changed Everything
Negalem lived in a remote Ethiopian community with limited access to modern medical facilities.
Her circumstances changed when an American government official encountered her during a mission in Africa.
Determined to help, he began researching specialists capable of treating exceptionally complicated vascular malformations.
His search eventually led him to Dr. Milton Waner and Dr. Teresa O, a husband-and-wife surgical team at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.
After reviewing Negalem’s case, the doctors agreed to take on the extraordinary challenge.
A Surgery So Complex Doctors Called It a 12 Out of 10
On June 23, 2021, Negalem underwent a major operation lasting approximately 12 hours.
Before removing the growth, interventional specialist Dr. Robert Rosen performed procedures to reduce blood flow within the abnormal vascular tissue.
Surgeons then began carefully removing the mass, working around vital facial nerves, muscles and blood vessels.
The abnormality had also affected parts of her jaw and cheekbone, requiring additional reconstruction.
Her surgeons described the procedure as exceptionally difficult, rating its complexity beyond the usual ten-point scale.
The Extraordinary Moment After Surgery
Following the operation, Negalem’s appearance changed dramatically.
Just two weeks later, photographs showed the enormous growth had been removed, revealing facial features previously obscured by the mass.
Her father expressed profound gratitude to the medical professionals who had helped his daughter.
Lenox Hill Hospital and Northwell Health covered the hospital expenses and postoperative care, allowing the family to receive treatment they otherwise could not have accessed.
A New Beginning for Negalem
Although the main operation was successful, doctors explained that Negalem would need an additional procedure to address a small amount of abnormal tissue remaining beneath her tongue.
Her recovery also required continued observation as postoperative swelling gradually improved.
For her family, the operation represented something they had once struggled to imagine: a future without the enormous growth threatening their daughter’s life.
Negalem’s story highlights how one stranger’s decision to help, combined with specialized medical care, can change a child’s future.
