Mom Noticed a Small Bump Near Her 3-Year-Old Daughter’s Eye — Then Came a Devastating Cancer Diagnosis
When Miranda Aldridge noticed a tiny bump near her three-year-old daughter Camryn’s eye, she initially thought it was something harmless. Her little girl seemed healthy, playful and full of energy.
But within weeks, the swelling grew dramatically. What doctors first suspected was a benign cyst would eventually lead to a devastating cancer diagnosis that changed the Florida family’s life.
A Small Bump That Kept Getting Bigger
In August 2024, Miranda took Camryn to a pediatrician after noticing that the unusual swelling near her eye was not disappearing.
The doctor suspected a cyst and referred the family to a dermatologist. However, the earliest available appointment was several months away.
Miranda and her husband, Bryan, became increasingly worried when the lump grew significantly larger by early September.
After repeatedly contacting medical offices, they finally secured an earlier appointment.
A dermatologist suspected a benign hair-follicle tumor called pilomatricoma and referred Camryn for surgery.
The Phone Call That Changed Everything
On September 27, 2024, Camryn underwent a short procedure to remove the mass.
Her parents felt relieved. They believed the frightening experience was finally behind them.
But just four days later, Miranda noticed that the swelling appeared to be returning.
Then, on October 3, the surgeon called with the pathology results.
The removed tissue was malignant.
Miranda and Bryan were devastated. Further hospital examinations initially raised concerns about leukemia, but subsequent testing found no cancer cells in Camryn’s bone marrow or spinal fluid.
Additional scans confirmed that she had B-cell lymphoma, with the only visible cancer identified in the facial tumor.

At Just Three Years Old, She Began Chemotherapy
Camryn immediately began a demanding treatment program involving multiple phases of chemotherapy, intravenous medications and spinal procedures.
Her family suddenly found themselves navigating hospital appointments, blood tests and difficult medical decisions while trying to preserve as much normal childhood as possible.
Despite everything, Camryn continued showing a remarkable willingness to participate in everyday activities.
Her mother began documenting the family’s experience, sharing both the difficult moments and the small victories that helped them keep going.
When Her Hair Began Falling Out, Her Family Did Something Special
By December, Camryn’s chemotherapy had begun causing noticeable hair loss.
For a little girl who loved bows, ponytails and dressing up, the experience was particularly difficult.
Instead of allowing the moment to become something she feared, her parents helped her prepare for cutting her hair.
Camryn decided she wanted her family members to participate.
They gathered together, and each person took a turn cutting a small section of her hair.
The emotional video later attracted more than 60 million views, introducing millions of people to Camryn’s journey.
Turning a Painful Journey Into Hope for Other Children
As support poured in, Miranda established Courage for Cam, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing encouragement and creative resources to children facing cancer.
The family also developed a coloring book to help bring moments of happiness to children undergoing difficult treatments.
When PEOPLE shared Camryn’s story in June 2025, her treatment plan included maintenance chemotherapy scheduled to continue through December 2026.
Her journey was still ongoing, but her family had found strength in the extraordinary kindness of their community.
What began as a tiny, seemingly harmless bump near a little girl’s eye had become a life-changing experience — one that inspired her family to help other children facing similar challenges.
