Baby Girl Born With More Than 100 Birthmarks Faces Cancer Diagnosis Before Her First Birthday
When Katelyn Clarke welcomed her third child into the world, she expected to begin another beautiful chapter of motherhood. But shortly after her daughter Macey-Mai was born, doctors discovered an extremely rare skin condition that would change their family’s lives.
The little girl had a large dark birthmark covering her back, along with more than 100 smaller marks scattered across her tiny body.
Months later, what initially appeared to be a rare congenital skin condition became an even more frightening medical battle when doctors confirmed that one of her growing lesions was cancerous.
A Rare Condition Discovered Shortly After Birth
Macey-Mai was born in May 2025 in Plymouth, England, following what her mother described as a normal pregnancy.
Doctors diagnosed her with giant congenital melanocytic nevus (GCMN), a rare condition involving unusually large pigmented birthmarks that develop before birth.
Her largest birthmark covered her entire back, while more than 100 smaller marks appeared across her stomach, scalp, arms and legs.
Although congenital melanocytic nevi are generally benign, larger forms of the condition are associated with an increased risk of melanoma.
Seven Painful Lesions Begin Growing
As Macey-Mai grew, her mother noticed seven concerning lesions developing on the large birthmark covering her back.
The lesions became painful, increased rapidly in size and began bleeding.
In August 2025, doctors performed surgery to remove the affected tissue and sent samples for further examination, including genetic testing.
While waiting for the results, Katelyn was instructed to monitor her daughter’s skin carefully and photograph any visible changes.
Every new mark or change in size became another reason for concern.

A Devastating Diagnosis at Just 10 Months Old
In March 2026, the family received heartbreaking news.
Tests confirmed that one of Macey-Mai’s lesions was malignant.
Katelyn had understood that her daughter’s rare condition carried an increased cancer risk, but she had not expected to confront that possibility while her little girl was still a baby.
The diagnosis brought new concerns about potential cancer progression and the possibility of further surgery and treatment.
Her mother continued carefully documenting changes across Macey-Mai’s skin while awaiting additional medical guidance.
A Mother Determined to Celebrate Her Baby Girl
Despite the uncertainty surrounding her daughter’s health, Katelyn remained determined to give Macey-Mai a childhood filled with love and precious memories.
As her first birthday approached, the mother of three hoped to organize a special celebration for her little girl.
The milestone carried particular emotional significance because the family did not know what medical challenges might lie ahead.
By sharing Macey-Mai’s experience, Katelyn also hoped to raise awareness of giant congenital melanocytic nevus and the serious complications that can sometimes accompany the condition.
For this family, every milestone had become especially meaningful as they continued navigating an uncertain medical journey together.
