Baby Girl Born With a Massive Facial Tumor Gets a Second Chance After Her Mother Refuses to Give Up

When little Guzal Ruzibaeva was born, her family discovered that she had a vascular tumor on her face. What initially appeared as an unusual birthmark soon developed into a far more serious medical problem.

The growth expanded rapidly, dramatically affecting her facial appearance and raising concerns about her health.

Her family faced an agonizing challenge: finding someone with the expertise to treat their daughter before her condition became even more dangerous.

A Rare and Severe Facial Growth

Doctors identified Guzal’s condition as a hemangioma, a benign tumor formed by abnormal growth of blood vessels.

Although many infantile hemangiomas eventually shrink, severe cases can grow extensively and require specialized treatment.

Guzal’s tumor was particularly concerning because of its size and location on her face.

Her family needed medical care that was not readily available near their home.

Her Mother Refused to Abandon Hope

Determined to find treatment, Guzal’s family learned about a specialist medical clinic in Moscow, where an international team was evaluating children with complex vascular birthmarks.

Reaching the clinic required an exhausting journey by train.

But for her mother, the possibility of finding help for her daughter made the difficult trip worthwhile.

At the clinic, the family met Dr. Gregory Levitin, a vascular birthmark specialist visiting from New York.

A Specialist Recognized the Danger

After examining Guzal, Dr. Levitin realized that her condition required urgent and extensive treatment.

He believed the care she was receiving was insufficient for the severity of her case.

Returning to New York, he approached Mount Sinai administrators and advocated for the hospital to help the little girl.

His intervention opened the door to specialized treatment that her family had struggled to obtain.

Four Surgeries and Multiple Laser Treatments

Guzal’s medical journey involved several stages rather than a single operation.

According to the Vascular Birthmarks Foundation’s published account, she underwent four surgeries and numerous laser treatments, including care involving Dr. Tatiana Belysheva.

Each stage contributed to addressing the extensive vascular tumor and improving the affected facial tissues.

The foundation documented her progress through photographs taken at different points in her treatment.

Her Before-and-After Photographs Tell an Extraordinary Story

One photograph shows Guzal as a baby in her mother’s arms in June 2012, with the facial hemangioma clearly visible.

Another photograph, taken in December 2015, shows a smiling Guzal after her series of operations and laser treatments.

The difference between the images illustrates the progress achieved through years of specialist medical care.

For her family, the journey represented something far greater than a physical transformation. Their daughter had received medical attention that once seemed impossible to access.

Guzal’s story highlights the importance of early specialist evaluation for severe vascular birthmarks and the determination of families seeking care for children with complex conditions.
