Bride-to-Be Attacked With Scissors by Fiancé Just Weeks Before Wedding, Arizona Mother Says

An Arizona mother of two is recovering after she says her fiancé brutally attacked her with a pair of scissors just weeks before they were due to get married.

Emily Byles, who lives in Glendale, Arizona, said the assault happened shortly after she moved into a new home with her fiancé. She recalled being shocked when the man she planned to marry allegedly turned on her, stabbing her in the face and neck.

“He wasn’t trying to just hurt me. He was trying to end my life,” Byles told FOX 10 Phoenix.

Byles said her fiancé struck her in the head around 30 times during the attack. In the chaos, she initially did not realize she had also been stabbed with scissors.

The situation became even more frightening when, according to Byles, her fiancé threatened to attack her two daughters. Her older daughter called 911, helping bring emergency responders to the scene before the situation could escalate further.

The injuries left Byles facing a difficult recovery, while the home where the assault occurred was reportedly left uninhabitable. She is now working to find a safe place for herself and her children as they try to rebuild their lives.

The attack came just a month before the couple had planned to marry, making the alleged violence particularly devastating for Byles, who said she never expected someone she trusted to hurt her in such a way.

The suspect, identified in local reporting as Zachary Velasquez, is in custody and faces multiple felony charges. The allegations have not yet been proven in court.

A fundraising campaign has been established to help Byles and her daughters secure housing and replace essential belongings as they begin again.

Domestic violence advocates say abuse can develop through controlling behavior before becoming physical. They encourage people experiencing threats or intimidation to seek support and develop a safety plan.

For Byles, the focus now is on healing, protecting her daughters and finding a way forward after an attack that changed her life just weeks before what was supposed to be one of its happiest days.
