Newly Released Bodycam Footage Shows Moments After 6-Year-Old Shoots Virginia Teacher Abby Zwerner
The newly unsealed footage offers a disturbing look at the immediate aftermath of a shooting that shocked the community and raised serious questions about school safety, firearm storage and whether warnings before the incident were properly addressed.

Police Bodycam Captures the Classroom After the Shooting
In the footage, officers enter the classroom and find the young student being restrained by reading specialist Amy Kovac. The teacher informs police that the boy has a gun and points them toward the weapon.
The child can be heard shouting profanities at adults and officers. When asked about the firearm, he tells police that he took it from his mother. He also says he does not care if he is taken to jail.
The child’s face was blurred in the released video because of his age. The footage had previously been used as evidence but remained sealed until its release was sought by local newspapers.

Teacher Abby Zwerner Suffered Serious Injuries
The shooting occurred on January 6, 2023, while Zwerner was teaching her first-grade class at Richneck Elementary School.
The bullet passed through her hand and lodged in her chest. Despite her injuries, she helped get her students out of the classroom before seeking medical assistance.
Zwerner underwent multiple surgeries and has described the lasting physical and emotional effects of the shooting. Reports say she has not fully recovered the use of her left hand.
In November 2025, a jury awarded Zwerner $10 million in her civil lawsuit against former assistant principal Ebony Parker. The lawsuit alleged that school officials failed to respond appropriately to warnings about the child before the shooting.
The Child’s Mother Faced Criminal Consequences
The handgun belonged to the boy’s mother, Deja Taylor. Investigators said the child obtained the firearm from her purse before bringing it to school.
Taylor pleaded guilty to felony child neglect in Virginia and also faced federal firearm-related charges. She received prison sentences in the state and federal cases.
The child himself was not criminally charged because of his age under Virginia law.
New Footage Renews Questions About School Safety
The release has renewed discussion about how schools respond to warnings of potential violence, how firearms should be stored securely and what safeguards can prevent children from accessing loaded weapons.
For Zwerner, the consequences have extended far beyond the day of the shooting. The case remains a painful reminder of how quickly a school day can change and how deeply a single incident can affect a teacher, students and an entire community.
