Driver Allegedly Caught at 182km/h With High Blood-Alcohol Reading in Darwin

A Northern Territory man has been charged after police allegedly caught him driving at 182 kilometres per hour in an 80km/h zone while under the influence of alcohol and drugs.

Police Spot Car Travelling at Extreme Speed

Northern Territory Police said officers spotted the man driving along Elrundie Avenue in Moulden, near Darwin, shortly after 8pm on Saturday.

The vehicle was allegedly travelling at 182km/h in an area where the speed limit was 80km/h.

Police immediately began an operation to stop the vehicle and prevent what they described as dangerous behaviour from continuing on the road.

Driver Taken to Police Station

After the vehicle was stopped, the driver was taken to Palmerston police station for further testing.

Police said the man returned a blood-alcohol reading of 0.153, more than three times the legal limit for an unrestricted driver in the Northern Territory.

He also allegedly returned a positive result for two prohibited drugs.

Multiple Charges Laid

The man has been charged with driving at a dangerous speed, high-range drink-driving and drug-driving.

The allegations cover several serious road-safety offences, with police warning that excessive speed combined with alcohol and drugs can create an extremely dangerous situation for other road users.

Police said the incident could have resulted in serious injuries or deaths had officers not intervened.

Police Warn of Consequences

Territory Road Policing officer-in-charge Devrim Kanyilmaz described the alleged driving behaviour as reckless and said it showed a lack of consideration for the safety of other people on the road.

Police also thanked the road-policing team involved in stopping the vehicle, saying their intervention may have prevented a serious crash.

The incident is another reminder of the risks created when excessive speed is combined with impaired driving.

Case to Return to Court

The man was released on bail and is due to appear in Darwin Local Court on October 20.

The allegations against him have not been tested in court. The court process will determine the outcome of the charges.

Police continue to urge drivers to obey speed limits and never drive while affected by alcohol or drugs.
