The Price of Betrayal

PART 2 — THE LIE THAT DESTROYED EVERYTHING

“Tell me exactly what you just said about my child.”

Alexander’s voice cut through the ballroom.

Vanessa’s champagne glass trembled in her hand.

“Alexander, darling, you’re misunderstanding me.”

“Then explain.”

She glanced at Margaret before lowering her eyes.

“I only heard rumors. Claire has been seeing another man. I didn’t want you to be hurt.”

Alexander stared at her.

“Who?”

“I don’t know his name. But I saw her meeting someone outside a restaurant several weeks ago.”

Margaret immediately stepped forward.

“I knew it! That woman has always been hiding something. Alexander, you cannot let her deceive you.”

Alexander turned toward his mother.

“Be quiet.”

The two words silenced her.

He looked at Vanessa again.

“Do you have proof?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“I… I have a photograph.”

She quickly took out her phone and showed him a picture of Claire standing beside a man outside a restaurant.

Alexander studied it.

The man was Claire’s doctor, Dr. Samuel Carter.

He remembered seeing him at a charity event.

“That’s her obstetrician,” Daniel suddenly said from behind him.

Alexander’s expression changed.

“Her what?”

Daniel swallowed.

“Dr. Carter. He’s been treating Mrs. Moretti.”

Alexander looked at the photograph again.

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

“You knew she was pregnant?”

Vanessa’s silence answered him.

His jaw tightened.

“Get out of my sight.”

“Alexander, I did this because I love you!”

He stepped closer.

“You just accused my unborn child of being another man’s.”

Vanessa began crying, but Alexander no longer cared.

He turned to Daniel.

“Find Claire. And get me every security recording from the last three months. I want to know who has been following my wife.”

“Yes, sir.”

Meanwhile, I was sitting in the back of a black SUV heading toward a small private airport outside Chicago.

My phone wouldn’t stop ringing.

Alexander.
Alexander.
Alexander.

I finally switched it off.

Beside me sat my attorney, Victoria Hayes, a woman who had helped me prepare for this moment months ago.

“Are you certain you want to proceed tonight?” she asked gently.

I looked out at the passing city lights.

“Yes.”

“Your husband will probably use every resource he has to find you.”

“I know.”

Victoria opened her briefcase.

“Then there’s something you should know. The divorce documents are ready. But your financial investigation has uncovered something unexpected.”

I turned toward her.

“What?”

She handed me a folder.

Inside were bank transfers, property records, and confidential company documents.

For months, Alexander had been transferring money from Moretti Holdings into an offshore account.

And the beneficiary wasn’t him.

It was Vanessa Blake.

My hands tightened around the papers.

“How much?”

“Approximately eighty million dollars.”

I stared at the number.

“Why?”

Victoria hesitated.

“That’s what we’re trying to establish. But there’s something more concerning. Some of those transfers were authorized using your signature.”

I felt cold.

“My signature?”

“Yes. Someone forged your name.”

I slowly closed the folder.

For five years, I had protected Alexander’s reputation, defended his family, and trusted his promises.

Now I understood that the betrayal went much deeper than another woman.

“Victoria,” I said quietly, “I want everything investigated.”

She nodded.

“Everything?”

“Every account. Every company. Every secret.”

I looked down at my stomach.

“And make sure nobody can use my child to control me.”

That night, I left Chicago.

And for the first time in five years, I didn’t belong to Alexander Moretti anymore.
