The Rancher’s Secret PART 3 — THE SECRET BENEATH THE NUMBERS

The Rancher’s Secret
PART 3 — THE SECRET BENEATH THE NUMBERS
The fire destroyed the equipment shed, but thankfully nobody was injured.
Investigators later confirmed that it had been deliberately started.
Wade was furious, but he didn’t blame me.
Instead, he asked me to explain the photograph.
So I finally told him everything.
Six years earlier, Daniel and I had built a financial consulting company together. I handled the investigations and accounting, while he managed the clients.
Then I discovered that he was stealing money from investors and using fake companies to hide the transactions.
I reported him.
But before the investigation was completed, Daniel disappeared.
A few months later, I discovered that he had secretly transferred several properties into my name. He had intended to make me look like the mastermind behind the fraud.
Federal investigators eventually cleared me, but the experience destroyed my reputation, my marriage, and almost every relationship I had.
“I ran because I was tired of looking over my shoulder,” I finished.
Wade sat silently.
Then he reached across the desk and placed his hand over mine.
“You don’t have to run anymore.”
I wanted to believe him.
But the following morning, we received a call from the bank.
Someone had submitted documents claiming that Wade was mentally incapable of managing his finances and that Preston Hale had been appointed as his financial representative.
It was a carefully constructed attempt to freeze the ranch’s accounts.
Fortunately, the bank hadn’t approved the request.
I examined the paperwork.
Then I noticed something familiar.
The signature on the medical authorization belonged to a doctor who had supposedly treated Wade’s late wife.
Margaret.
I looked at Wade.
“Did your wife ever receive treatment through a private medical foundation?”
He nodded slowly.
“Yes. Why?”
I showed him the document.
“Because this foundation is connected to Daniel’s old network.”
Wade went pale.
Margaret had died four years earlier after a sudden illness. Before her death, she had discovered suspicious land transactions involving a development company.
She had wanted Wade to investigate them, but she never got the chance.
Suddenly, everything made sense.
Daniel hadn’t chosen Concaid Ranch randomly.
He had been targeting the property for years.
That afternoon, I contacted the federal investigators who had handled my original case. I provided them with the recording, the forged documents, and the financial connections between Daniel, Preston, and Lenora.
Within forty-eight hours, they uncovered something extraordinary.
Daniel had been using a second identity to control several shell companies. Millions of dollars had passed through accounts connected to the fraudulent ranch invoices.
The investigators arranged a controlled meeting.
Wade agreed to invite Daniel to the ranch under the pretense that he was willing to sign the final property agreement.
On Friday evening, Daniel arrived in an expensive black SUV.
Preston and Lenora were already waiting in the dining room.
Daniel entered wearing a tailored charcoal suit.
His eyes immediately found me.
“Still working in the kitchen?” he asked mockingly.
I placed a folder on the table.
“Not tonight.”
He glanced at Wade.
“Have you reconsidered my offer?”
Wade leaned back in his chair.
“I’ve reconsidered a great many things.”
Daniel opened his briefcase.
“Then let’s finish this.”
I slid several financial statements toward him.
“Before we do, perhaps you can explain these transfers.”
His smile disappeared.
I pointed to the first document.
“Four hundred and eighteen thousand dollars stolen from Concaid Ranch.”
Then the second.
“Several additional transfers through companies registered under false identities.”
Finally, I placed a photograph of Daniel beside the original investigation file.
“And these transactions began six years ago, before you disappeared.”
Daniel stared at me.
“You think a few papers can destroy me?”
“No,” I answered calmly. “Your own records will.”
At that moment, the dining room doors opened.
Federal agents entered.
Preston immediately stood up.
Lenora began screaming.
Daniel attempted to reach for his briefcase, but an agent ordered him to step away from the table.
“You have no idea who you’re dealing with!” Daniel shouted.
I looked directly into his eyes.
“Actually, Daniel, I know exactly who you are.”
For the first time, he had nothing to say.
But just as the agents escorted him outside, he turned toward me.
“You’ll regret this, Hester.”
I didn’t look away.
“I regretted marrying you. Nothing you do now can change that.”
And then he was gone.
