The Little Girl Who Woke the Mafia Boss
Part 3 – The Mafia Boss’s First Question
Lorenzo woke up properly the following morning.
By then, the mansion was surrounded by security.
Two doctors remained in his bedroom, while Isabella refused to leave his side.
I had been instructed to keep Emma away from the medical wing until Lorenzo’s condition stabilized.
But at ten o’clock, a security guard appeared at the laundry room.
“Mr. Moretti wants to see you.”
My hands went cold.
“Me?”
He nodded.
“Both you and your daughter.”
I looked down at Emma, who was busy feeding her stuffed bunny a pretend biscuit.
“Mommy, are we visiting sleepy man?”
I forced a smile.
“Yes, sweetheart.”
When we entered the bedroom, Lorenzo was sitting slightly upright against several pillows.
He looked exhausted, but his eyes were open.
And they were watching me.
“Leave us,” he ordered.

Isabella immediately protested.
“Lorenzo, the doctor said you shouldn’t—”
“Five minutes, Isabella.”
His voice was weak, but there was still something unmistakably commanding about it.
The room emptied.
I stood beside the door, holding Emma’s hand.
Lorenzo looked at my daughter.
“What’s her name?”
“Emma.”
He repeated it quietly.
“Emma…”
Then he looked at me.
“She’s yours?”
I nodded.
His gaze returned to the little girl.
“How old?”
“Sixteen months.”
He went silent.
Something unreadable crossed his face.
Then he asked the question I had dreaded.
“Clara, who is her father?”
My throat tightened.
“That’s not something you need to worry about.”
His jaw tightened.
“I’ve been unconscious for three weeks. Apparently, I wake up to find a beautiful little girl singing beside my bed, and the first person I see is a woman I spent five years trying to find.”
He paused.
“Forgive me for asking questions.”
I looked away.
Emma suddenly walked toward his bed.
“Sleepy man, you need bunny.”
She placed her stuffed rabbit beside him.
For the first time, I saw something resembling a smile on Lorenzo’s face.
“Thank you, little one.”
Emma climbed onto the chair beside the bed.
“Mommy says sharing is nice.”
Lorenzo looked at me again.
“Your daughter has better manners than most of my employees.”
Despite everything, I almost smiled.
Then his expression became serious.
“Clara, I need to know what happened five years ago.”
I lowered my eyes.
“Vanessa happened.”
His entire body stiffened.
“Vanessa Cole?”
I nodded.
“She was my best friend. She told me you were dangerous. She said you were only interested in using me to get information about her company.”
Lorenzo looked genuinely confused.
“What?”
“She showed me photographs and messages. She told me you had been investigating me. Then she accused me of stealing documents.”
I swallowed.
“I believed her. I was young, frightened, and had nobody to protect me.”
Lorenzo slowly shook his head.
“I never investigated you.”
He looked toward the window.
“Vanessa was working with one of my business partners. I discovered she had been stealing money from my company. The night I met you, I intended to confront her.”
I stared at him.
“She told me you were going to destroy her.”
“She was trying to make sure you wouldn’t believe anything I said.”
His expression darkened.
“And she succeeded.”
I felt tears sliding down my cheeks.
“Why didn’t you find me?”
“I did.”
He reached toward the bedside table.
“My men searched for you for months. Then we discovered someone had altered your employment records and used a false identity to make it look like you had left the country.”
I covered my mouth.
Vanessa had done more than destroy my friendship with her.
She had deliberately erased me from his life.
Before either of us could speak again, Lorenzo’s phone rang.
Isabella entered and handed it to him.
“It’s the security director. They found something.”
Lorenzo answered.
“What?”
A man’s voice came through the speaker.
“Boss, we recovered part of the deleted medical-wing footage. Someone entered your bedroom after the little girl left.”
Lorenzo’s expression hardened.
“Who?”
There was a brief silence.
Then the security director answered.
“Vanessa Cole.”
My blood turned to ice.
Lorenzo slowly lowered the phone.
“Find her.”
Isabella nodded and immediately left.
But the security director wasn’t finished.
“There’s something else, sir. We checked the visitor records from the night of your accident. Vanessa wasn’t alone.”
“Who was with her?”
The answer made Lorenzo’s face turn dangerously cold.
“Your uncle. Mr. Richard Moretti.”
Lorenzo stared at the ceiling for a moment.
Then he looked at me.
“Clara, listen carefully. Until I know why those two were working together, you and Emma will stay inside this mansion.”
I shook my head.
“I don’t want trouble with your family.”
His voice softened.
“You were never the trouble, Clara.”
He glanced at Emma, who was now gently stroking his tattooed hand.
Then he whispered something that made my heart stop.
“There’s one more thing I need to ask you.”
“What?”
“Five years ago, before you disappeared, did you ever tell Vanessa that you were pregnant?”
I couldn’t breathe.
My fingers tightened around Emma’s little hand.
Because there was something Lorenzo didn’t know.
Something I had hidden from everyone.
And something that could change the entire Moretti family.
I looked at him through my tears.
“Yes.”
Lorenzo went completely still.
“When?”
I swallowed.
“Three days after the charity event.”
His eyes widened.
“Clara…”
I looked down at Emma.
Then I finally told him the truth.
“I was pregnant with your child.”
The room fell silent.
Lorenzo stared at Emma.
His little girl.
The child who had unknowingly brought him back from the edge of death.
His lips parted, but no words came.
Then he looked at me again.
“Is she…?”
I nodded.
“Yes, Lorenzo.”
His eyes filled with tears.
“She’s my daughter.”
And just as he reached toward Emma, the bedroom door suddenly burst open.
A security guard rushed inside.
“Boss! We have a problem.”
Lorenzo’s expression hardened.
“What now?”
The guard looked at me before answering.
“Vanessa Cole is downstairs.”
He hesitated.
“She says she knows about the little girl.”
Then he added the words that made the entire room freeze.
“And she claims Emma isn’t Lorenzo Moretti’s only child.”
