The Wife Who Vanished Part 2 – The Man Who Protected Her

The Wife Who Vanished
Part 2 – The Man Who Protected Her
Six months after I disappeared, Alexander Moretti was still searching for me.
He had hired private investigators across three states, contacted international security agencies, and offered a fortune to anyone who could provide information about my whereabouts.
But every lead ended the same way.
Nothing.
Meanwhile, thousands of miles away, I was building a new life with my son.
I had settled in a beautiful coastal town in California, in a quiet house overlooking the ocean. The property belonged to Nathaniel Sterling, although he had insisted that I treat it as my own.
Noah was now six months old.
He had Alexander’s dark hair, my eyes, and a smile that could make even the most difficult days feel worthwhile.
One morning, I was sitting on the terrace, feeding Noah when Nathaniel walked outside.
He wore a charcoal suit, holding two cups of coffee.
“How is our little prince today?”
I smiled.
“He’s been awake since five.”
Nathaniel laughed and sat opposite me.
“Then perhaps he’s preparing to become a businessman.”
“Please don’t encourage him. I want him to have a normal childhood.”
Nathaniel looked at Noah for a moment.
“That’s exactly what I want for him too.”
I studied the man sitting across from me.
For years, Nathaniel Sterling had been a distant family friend. He had known my father, attended our wedding, and quietly watched Alexander’s treatment of me deteriorate.
When I finally contacted him, I hadn’t expected him to help.
But he had done more than that.
He had arranged my lawyer, protected my assets, secured my new identity, and made sure nobody could use his influence to drag me back.
“Why are you doing all this for me?” I finally asked.

Nathaniel put down his coffee.
“Because your father once made me promise something.”
I frowned.
“My father?”
He nodded.
“Before he died, he told me that if Alexander ever made you unhappy, I should remind you that you had a family outside the Moretti empire. He wanted you to know that you never had to tolerate being mistreated just because you were married to a powerful man.”
My eyes filled with tears.
I hadn’t known my father had worried about me so much.
Nathaniel gently pushed a tissue toward me.
“Claire, you don’t owe me anything. I simply want you and Noah to be safe.”
For the first time since leaving Chicago, I felt completely at peace.
But that peace wouldn’t last forever.
In Chicago, Alexander was becoming increasingly desperate.
His company was suffering. He had canceled several international meetings and spent most of his time in his private office.
Sophia Reynolds had returned to his life, hoping their relationship would continue.
Unfortunately for her, Alexander barely acknowledged her.
One afternoon, she entered his office wearing an expensive white dress.
“Alexander, I’ve been calling you all morning.”
He didn’t look up.
“Leave.”
She stopped.
“Excuse me?”
“I said leave.”
Sophia approached his desk.
“You’re destroying yourself over a woman who clearly doesn’t want you anymore. Why can’t you accept that Claire chose to walk away?”
Alexander finally raised his eyes.
“Don’t mention her.”
Sophia laughed bitterly.
“She was never going to be enough for you. You know that.”
Alexander suddenly stood.
“Enough!”
His voice was so loud that his assistant outside immediately stopped typing.
Sophia stepped backward.
“Alexander…”
“Get out of my office. And don’t come back.”
She stared at him in disbelief before grabbing her handbag and leaving.
A moment later, his father entered.
Richard Moretti looked at his son with obvious disappointment.
“Still searching?”
Alexander rubbed his forehead.
“Yes.”
“Have you found them?”
“No.”
Richard placed a newspaper on the desk.
“Then perhaps you should stop wasting your time and start understanding what you did.”
Alexander looked up.
“Dad, she’s my wife.”
Richard’s expression hardened.
“She was your wife. And that little boy is your son. You weren’t there when he was born. You weren’t there when he took his first breath. You weren’t there when his mother needed you.”
Alexander lowered his eyes.
“I made a mistake.”
Richard shook his head.
“No, Alexander. You made a choice. You chose another woman over your pregnant wife.”
Then Richard revealed something that made his son go completely silent.
“I spoke to Nathaniel Sterling yesterday.”
Alexander immediately looked up.
“What?”
“He called me.”
“What did he say?”
Richard stared at him.
“He said Claire and the child are safe. And he told me that if you ever attempt to force them back into your life, he will make certain you regret it.”
Alexander clenched his jaw.
“He’s interfering in my family.”
Richard slammed his hand against the desk.
“Your family? You abandoned them! What makes you think you still have the right to decide where they live?”
Alexander said nothing.
Richard turned toward the door.
“One more thing. Your divorce hearing is scheduled for next month. I suggest you prepare yourself.”
When his father left, Alexander sat motionless.
For the first time, he realized that finding me wasn’t going to be enough.
Even if he found me, I might never forgive him.
Two weeks later, Nathaniel received an unexpected visitor.
His security director entered his office.
“Sir, Alexander Moretti is downstairs.”
Nathaniel didn’t look surprised.
“Did he come alone?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Let him in.”
A few minutes later, Alexander walked into the enormous office overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Nathaniel remained seated.
“Mr. Moretti. What an unpleasant surprise.”
Alexander ignored the remark.
“I want to see Claire and my son.”
Nathaniel slowly closed the folder in front of him.
“That isn’t happening.”
“He’s my child.”
“Then you should have remembered that before leaving his mother alone for four months.”
Alexander’s expression tightened.
“I know I made mistakes. I know I hurt her. But I want to make things right.”
Nathaniel studied him.
“Do you know what Claire told me when she arrived here?”
Alexander remained silent.
“She told me she was afraid to sleep because she had spent four years wondering whether her husband would come home angry, disappointed, or simply indifferent.”
Nathaniel stood.
“She gave birth without you. She spent the first nights of her son’s life alone. And when she finally left, she didn’t ask me for a mansion or a fortune. She asked for a place where nobody could hurt her again.”
Alexander looked down.
“I didn’t know.”
“That’s precisely the problem. You never bothered to know.”
For a long moment, neither man spoke.
Then Alexander asked quietly:
“Does she still love me?”
Nathaniel’s expression became unreadable.
“That is a question you should have asked before you boarded that plane.”
Alexander turned toward the door.
But before leaving, he stopped.
“Please tell her I want to apologize.”
Nathaniel nodded slightly.
“I’ll tell her. But whether she wants to hear it is entirely her decision.”
That evening, Nathaniel came to my house.
I was sitting on the nursery floor, watching Noah play with a soft stuffed bear.
“Claire, there’s something I need to tell you.”
I looked up.
“What happened?”
“Alexander came to see me today.”
My hands immediately stopped moving.
For several seconds, I couldn’t speak.
“Did he find us?”
“No. He doesn’t know this address. I made sure of that.”
I slowly exhaled.
“What did he want?”
“To see you and Noah. He also asked me to tell you that he wants to apologize.”
I looked down at my son.
Noah was happily chewing on his stuffed bear, completely unaware of the complicated world waiting beyond our little home.
“Do you think he has changed?” I whispered.
Nathaniel sat beside me.
“I don’t know. But you don’t have to find out.”
I picked up Noah and kissed his cheek.
“I don’t want to go back, Nathaniel.”
“Then you won’t.”
I looked at him.
“I want my son to grow up knowing he is loved. I don’t want him growing up watching his mother beg someone to care about her.”
Nathaniel nodded.
“Then that’s exactly what we’ll give him.”
But I didn’t know that the following morning, an unexpected package would arrive at my doorstep.
Inside was a small silver box.
And beneath it was a handwritten letter.
The handwriting was unmistakable.
Alexander’s.
