Baby Za’riah Thomas was only one month old when she died in Kansas City, Missouri, in February 2024. 💔👶

Police were called to the family home after receiving a report that an infant was not breathing. Investigators later said her mother, Mariah Thomas, told them she had intended to put her baby down for a nap but mistakenly placed her in an oven instead of the crib. The circumstances led to a criminal investigation. 🕊️

More than two years later, Mariah Thomas, now 28, pleaded guilty to first-degree endangering the welfare of a child resulting in death. A first-degree murder charge was dismissed as part of the plea agreement, and a Jackson County judge sentenced her to 13 years in prison, with credit for time already served.

The case is a heartbreaking reminder of how precious and fragile a young life can be.
