JOHANNESBURG, Sept. 23 (Reuters) — At least 11 people were killed and three others injured after three armed men opened fire on guests at a house party in a township south of Durban, South African police said.

The shooting took place on Tuesday night in KwaMakhutha, a township in KwaZulu-Natal province. Police said a woman believed to be pregnant and 13 men were among those attending the gathering.

Ten victims, including the woman, died at the scene, while four others were taken to hospital. One of those hospitalized later died from gunshot wounds, bringing the death toll to 11.

The motive for the attack was not immediately known. However, police said they could not rule out the possibility that the shooting was linked to a feud between rival groups.

Authorities launched a manhunt for the three suspects believed to have carried out the attack.

Police also said some of the victims had previously come to the attention of crime intelligence authorities in connection with alleged illegal activities. They did not provide further details about those claims.

The shooting adds to concerns over violent crime in South Africa, which has one of the world’s highest murder rates. According to the report, the country records an average of about 60 killings a day.

Violent crime is also expected to remain a major public concern ahead of South Africa’s municipal elections scheduled for November.
