The wife of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is facing a corruption trial as a series of investigations involving the prime minister’s family and political associates continues to generate controversy.

Begoña Gómez, who has denied wrongdoing, has been investigated over allegations involving influence peddling and the alleged misuse of public resources. The case has attracted considerable political attention, with Sánchez maintaining that the allegations against his wife are politically motivated.

Court Proceedings and Allegations

The case centers on Gómez’s involvement with a chair at Madrid’s Complutense University and allegations that she used personal connections to advance private interests. Prosecutors and defense lawyers have challenged aspects of the investigation and argued that the evidence does not justify the charges.

A judge initially ordered Gómez to surrender her passport and prohibited her from leaving Spain in June 2026, while requiring her to report to court twice a month. However, the Madrid Provincial Court later lifted those precautionary measures in July, allowing her to recover her passport.
