81-Year-Old Texas Man Works 14-Hour Days to Pay for Wife’s Cancer Treatment — Then Strangers Step In

At 81 years old, Don Johnson is still spending long days on the road, delivering delayed and lost luggage directly to customers’ homes. What began as a way to help cover everyday expenses became a necessity as his wife, Josephine, faced the enormous costs of cancer treatment.

The couple has been married for 57 years. Johnson told NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth that he sometimes works as many as 14 hours a day and drives hundreds of miles to make ends meet. Insurance helps cover some expenses, he said, but it does not pay for everything, leaving the couple struggling with treatment, medication, groceries and other household costs.

Johnson has worked as an independent contractor delivering lost luggage for about three years. He said he had tried to find other work but eventually continued with luggage deliveries because it was the job that would hire him.

His situation came to wider attention after Erin Howell, a Dallas-Fort Worth-area resident, reviewed footage from her doorbell camera. The video showed Johnson slowly carrying her heavy luggage up a steep flight of stairs. Concerned by what she saw, Howell went outside to help him and asked about his circumstances.

What Howell learned deeply affected her. Johnson explained that he was continuing to work because his wife was battling cancer and the family’s expenses had become overwhelming. His vehicle had also accumulated more than 200,000 miles and was experiencing frequent mechanical problems, making the demanding job even more difficult.

Instead of simply offering temporary assistance, Howell decided to organize a much larger effort. She launched a GoFundMe campaign called “Help Don Retire” and created a TikTok page to share the couple’s story and encourage others to help.

The response was far greater than either of them expected. By September 24, the fundraiser had surpassed $371,000 from more than 6,500 donations, approaching its $400,000 goal. The money is intended to help with the couple’s medical and living expenses and potentially allow Johnson to step away from the physically demanding work.

Johnson said the unexpected generosity has changed the way he sees the world. After years of working to support his wife, he said the outpouring of support has “restored my faith in people.” He also expressed hope that he would soon be able to stop working and spend more time with Josephine.

For Josephine, the response has been equally emotional. She said she never expected so many strangers to respond to their situation, and the messages and prayers from people around the country have given her renewed strength as she continues facing cancer.

What started with a few seconds of doorbell-camera footage has turned into a remarkable show of community support. For Don and Josephine Johnson, the donations represent more than financial assistance—they offer the possibility of spending their remaining time together without the constant burden of wondering how the next medical bill will be paid.
