Irish rock band U2 returned to Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin on September 25, 2026, marking the 50th anniversary of their formation with a surprise performance for students and staff.

The band, featuring Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen Jr., performed in the school grounds where their musical journey began in 1976. Hundreds of students gathered to watch the special concert, which celebrated the group’s long history and connection to the school.

A Return to Where It All Began

U2 formed after 14-year-old Larry Mullen Jr. posted a handwritten notice on the school’s bulletin board seeking musicians. The announcement brought together the teenagers who would eventually become one of the world’s most successful rock bands.

Five decades later, the group returned to the same setting, recreating memories from their early years while performing for a new generation of students.

A Setlist Spanning Five Decades

The performance included well-known songs such as I Will Follow, One, Beautiful Day and Vertigo, alongside early material from the band’s career. Students from a local music education programme also joined the band for a performance of One.

The anniversary celebration comes as U2 prepares for the release of a new album, Carnaval de Luz, scheduled for November 13, 2026. The event brought the band back to its roots while highlighting its continuing musical activities.
