Saylor Hayes’ Mother Had Prior Child Abuse Case Months Before Daughter’s Death

The mother of 5-year-old Saylor Hayes had faced child-related criminal charges in Virginia just months before her daughter was found dead in South Carolina, according to court records.

Geordyn Nichole Hayes, 31, was arrested in Washington County, Virginia, on February 17, 2026. Records show she was charged with felony child cruelty or unlawful conduct toward a child, felony child abuse involving reckless or willful disregard for human life, and misdemeanor public intoxication.

The Virginia case later changed significantly. The felony child-cruelty charge was dismissed on August 14, 2026. Three days later, the felony child-abuse charge was amended to contributing to the delinquency of a minor and resolved with Hayes ordered to pay $546 in court costs. Her public-intoxication charge remains pending, with another hearing scheduled for March 12, 2027.

Hayes and her husband, John Herb Hayes III, had also been arrested in Virginia in 2023 in connection with a separate child-abuse case. Both were charged with two felony counts of child abuse involving reckless or willful disregard for human life. In 2024, they entered nolo contendere pleas, meaning they accepted the court’s punishment without formally admitting or denying guilt. They received two years of probation, and the case was dismissed in early 2026.

Those earlier cases are now receiving renewed attention following the death of Saylor, who was reported missing from a rental home near Hagley Landing on Pawleys Island, South Carolina, on August 30.

Authorities say Saylor was severely nonverbal, had autism, a known affinity for water and a history of wandering away from caregivers. According to arrest warrants, investigators allege that her parents failed to provide appropriate supervision and safeguards and later directed search efforts toward a tracking device they knew Saylor was not wearing.

Saylor’s body was found in nearby water on August 31 after a large multi-agency search. Her parents were arrested in Tennessee on September 1 and later extradited to South Carolina. Both now face charges of unlawfully placing a child at risk and willfully abandoning a child.

An autopsy found pulmonary edema, or fluid in the lungs, but officials have not yet determined Saylor’s final cause and manner of death. Additional testing is being conducted, meaning the medical findings remain incomplete.

After returning to South Carolina, Geordyn and John Hayes appeared before a Georgetown County judge, who denied bond for both parents. A preliminary hearing is currently scheduled for November 19, 2026.

The allegations against Saylor’s parents have not been proven in court. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death remains ongoing, while authorities await additional medical findings and continue reviewing the evidence.
