Nearly 1.5 million people have been forced from their homes across Haiti as violence continues to spread beyond the capital, according to a report released Friday by the International Organization for Migration.

The displacement crisis is increasingly affecting communities outside Port-au-Prince, with nearly 80% of internally displaced people now living elsewhere in the country, the report said.

The Artibonite department in central Haiti has recorded the sharpest recent increase in displacement. The region had previously been viewed as a refuge for families fleeing violence in other parts of the country.

The latest figures highlight the widening impact of Haiti’s security crisis, as growing numbers of residents are being forced to leave their homes in search of safer areas.
