Neighbor’s Concern Saves Elderly Man Who Had Gone Days Without Food
An elderly man living alone in South Korea was rescued after a neighbor noticed that he had not left his home for an unusually long period.
The man, identified only as Mr. A because of privacy protections, is in his 70s and lives alone in Chungju, North Chungcheong Province. According to Chungju city officials, he had been living without contact with his children since his wife died about 30 years ago.
As he grew older, the man reportedly began experiencing difficulties with everyday life. His condition eventually deteriorated to the point that he was unable to properly prepare or eat food.
A neighbor living directly across from his home noticed that he had not been seen outside for about a week. Concerned that something might be wrong, the neighbor contacted a local administrative welfare center on September 10.
Officials went to check on the man and found him in serious condition. He had reportedly gone several days without eating and was at risk of starvation.
He was taken to a hospital for treatment, where doctors provided intensive care. According to Chungju officials, his condition later stabilized and he regained much of his strength.
The case was reported by South Korean broadcaster SBS on September 23, with an image supplied by Chungju City and Yonhap News. The city said the man’s situation demonstrated how important it can be for neighbors to notice changes in the people living around them.
After his discharge, authorities plan to help him apply for long-term care support and connect him with local welfare services so that he can receive continued assistance.
A Chungju City official thanked the neighbor for paying attention and said the incident showed the role that local residents can play in identifying people who may need help.
The man’s identity has not been publicly released, and officials have not provided further details about his medical condition.
