Family of Four Rescued After Yacht Runs Aground on Remote Australian Reef

Whitsundays, Queensland, Australia — September 19, 2026

A family of four, including two children, was rescued by helicopter after their yacht became stranded on a remote reef off the Queensland coast in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Stranded in the Dark

The family was sailing a 10-metre yacht about 120 kilometres off the Queensland mainland when the vessel struck Elizabeth Reef in the Whitsundays at around 4 a.m.

The parents and their two children, aged nine and 12, remained aboard the damaged yacht while waiting for help. The family had life jackets and activated an emergency position-indicating radio beacon, allowing Australian authorities to locate the vessel.

Helicopter Rescue at First Light

A rescue helicopter from Mackay reached the yacht around sunrise. By then, the vessel was badly damaged and surrounded by difficult reef conditions.

The helicopter crew had to maintain a precise hover above the yacht while a rescue swimmer was lowered onto the deck.

Each member of the family was secured individually and winched from the yacht into the helicopter.

Rescue footage showed the operation taking place above the isolated reef, with the yacht appearing increasingly submerged as the final person was taken to safety.

Father Treated for Head Injuries

Once all four family members were aboard the helicopter, they were flown to Whitsunday Airport.

The father had suffered head injuries during the incident. A critical-care paramedic treated him during the flight before he was transferred to Queensland Ambulance Service and taken to Proserpine Hospital.

The other family members were also brought safely ashore.

A Complex Rescue

CQ Rescue CEO Tim Healee described the operation as particularly challenging because the rescue took place over a damaged yacht on an isolated reef.

The aircraft crew had to keep the helicopter stable while the rescue swimmer moved between the vessel and the aircraft, with the yacht’s mast adding another hazard during the winching operation.

The rescue team credited careful coordination and preparation with helping bring all four family members to safety.

Safety Equipment Played a Key Role

Authorities later highlighted the importance of the family’s safety equipment. Their life jackets and activated emergency beacon helped rescuers locate them and provided protection while they waited for assistance.

The dramatic rescue ended with all four members of the family safely evacuated from the reef, although the yacht itself was left severely damaged.
