Premature Baby Reunites With Doctor Two Years After Leaving the NICU

Denver, Colorado, United States — September 27, 2026

A little girl who spent the first nine months of her life in a neonatal intensive care unit has returned to the hospital for a special reunion with the doctor who cared for her when she was born.

Tilly was born at just 25 weeks’ gestation, more than three months before her expected due date. She weighed only 1 pound and 1 ounce at birth and spent nine months receiving intensive medical care at HCA HealthONE Rocky Mountain Children’s Hospital in Denver.

A Difficult Start

Tilly’s mother, Anna Hill, described the family’s time in the NICU as an emotional roller coaster. The long hospitalization included difficult days as well as moments of hope.

Because of the length and complexity of Tilly’s stay, hospital staff affectionately referred to her as the “Queen of the NICU.” Her mother said the doctors, nurses, respiratory therapists and other staff eventually became like family.

Two Years Later, Tilly Comes Back

Two years after leaving the hospital, Tilly returned to meet John Ross, the associate neonatologist who had been her very first physician.

Ross remembered Tilly as one of the more complicated patients he had treated. Her prolonged hospitalization presented numerous challenges, making her eventual discharge especially meaningful for the medical team.

Seeing Tilly again was also unusual for Ross. Neonatologists do not often have the opportunity to meet their former patients years after they leave the hospital.

A Very Different Visit

This time, Tilly was no longer a tiny patient surrounded by medical equipment. She returned as a growing child, giving the medical team a chance to see how far she had come.

Ross said he was delighted to see her again, joking about how different the reunion felt compared with her time as a newborn.

For Hill, the visit was a chance to thank the people who had supported her family during the nine months they spent in the NICU.

A Story of Recovery

Tilly’s reunion with her first doctor offered a meaningful reminder of the long journey that premature babies and their families can face after birth.

For the medical team who cared for her, seeing Tilly return two years later was an opportunity to celebrate a former patient’s progress and reconnect with a family that had become part of their lives.
