Three-Year-Old Girl Dies After 10-Hour Rescue Operation in India

A three-year-old girl died after falling into an abandoned borewell in Faridabad, India, despite a 10-hour overnight rescue operation involving multiple emergency agencies.

The child, identified as Neha, fell into the borewell while playing with other children near her home in Sihi village on Sunday evening.

Rescuers Worked Through the Night

Local residents alerted authorities after the accident. Teams from the National Disaster Response Force, Haryana State Disaster Response Force, police, fire services and the municipal corporation were sent to the scene.

Rescuers initially heard the child crying from inside the borewell. They worked through the night, excavating around the shaft, supplying oxygen and using a camera to determine her position.

The narrow borewell and its depth made the rescue particularly difficult. Officials said the child was eventually brought out at around 3:50 a.m. on Monday.

Child Taken to Hospital

After being removed from the borewell, Neha was immediately taken to a hospital for medical treatment. Doctors later declared her dead.

Her father, Ramdeen, a daily-wage worker, said he was at work when local residents informed him that his daughter had fallen into the borewell.

Questions Over the Abandoned Borewell

The borewell belonged to the Faridabad Municipal Corporation and had reportedly remained unused for years.

According to officials and local residents, the borewell had previously been covered, but the lid had disappeared several days before the accident, leaving the opening exposed.

The incident has prompted scrutiny of abandoned civic infrastructure in residential areas. Officials said an inquiry would examine the circumstances surrounding the missing cover and whether negligence contributed to the tragedy.

Community Calls for Safety Checks

Residents have called for inspections of unused and abandoned borewells in the area to prevent similar accidents.

The tragedy has also renewed concerns about the dangers posed by unsecured openings in places where children regularly play.
